WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- The Women’s Hockey East Association is pleased to announce the selection of 24 student athletes representing all eight WHEA programs to its second “All-Star” game in the last four years. The Hockey East All-Stars will take on the 2010 U.S. Women’s National Team on Sunday, Nov. 22, at UNH’s Whittemore Center, as part of Team USA’s 2009 Qwest Tour. The tour is designed to pit Team USA against elite-level competition in preparation for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, B.C.

The forwards group includes senior snipers Kelly Paton (Woodstock, Ont.) from New Hampshire, BC’s Allie Thunstrom (Maplewood, Minn.) and Melissa Anderson (Langley, B.C.) from Boston University. That trio of players has scored 346 points all-time in their WHEA careers and they represent the league’s only active 100-point scorers. UNH’s Micaela Long (South Boston, Mass.) and Maine’s Amy Stech (Duluth, Minn.) will also bring veteran leadership to the group of seniors. The forward list also includes upperclassmen Lindsay Berman of Northeastern (Odenton, Md.) and UConn’s Amy Hollstein (Pembroke, Mass.).

“We are thrilled to once again host America’s best, on one of our campuses,” said Hockey East Commissioner Joe Bertagna. “The coaches have assembled a roster full of talent and with a good portion of the team comprised of underclassmen, we are excited about the future level of competition in our conference.”

The WHEA squad is loaded with underclassmen as 10 of the 24 participants are sophomores. At forward the list is headlined by Jenelle Kohanchuk (Winnipeg, Man.) from Boston University and Mary Restuccia (Chester Springs, Pa.) from Boston College. PC’s Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.), UConn’s Monique Weber (Rogers, Minn.) and BC’s Danielle Welch (Hastings, Minn.) fill out the WHEA roster up front. Terriers’ junior forward Lauren Cherewyk (St. Albert, Alb.) will serve as the lone alternate at forward on the WHEA roster.

On the defensive side of the puck, the roster is highlighted by UNH’s Courtney Birchard (Mississauga, Ont.) and UConn’s Cristin Allen (Pickering, Ont.). The roster also includes UConn’s Jody Sydor (St. Albert, Alb.), UVM’s Peggy Wakeham (Bay Roberts, Nfld.), BU’s Tara Watchorn (Newcastle, Ont.) and PC’s Amber Yung (Rockville, Va.) on the blueline. BU’s Kasey Boucher (Lewiston, Maine) and BC’s Katelyn Kurth (High Bridge, N.J.) will serve as alternates on the WHEA blueline for the exhibition game.

In goal, the WHEA All-Stars has some incredible depth, starting with 2009 Hockey East Rookie of the Year Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ont.) from Providence College. Huskies’ sophomore netminder Florence Schelling (Oberengstringen, Switzerland) has started the season on fire posting a 6-1-1 record with a 0.74 GAA and a .970 save percentage, leading the nation in both categories. UVM’s Kristen Olychuck (Kelowna, B.C.) will serve as the first alternate goaltender for the WHEA squad.

Boston College head coach Katie King will serve as the WHEA All-Stars head coach. She will be assisted by Linda Lundrigan from Northeastern, Meredith Roth of Providence College and Jaime Totten from the University of Connecticut. King was a standing member of the U.S. Women’s National Team from 1997 to 2006, during which time she competed in the first three Olympic Winter Games when women’s ice hockey was an official event. King won the gold medal in the 1998 Olympics, the silver medal in the 2002 Games and the bronze in 2006. King retired from playing hockey with 265 points in 210 international games. She is the all-time leading scorer for Team USA in Olympic contests, and second-highest scorer for the U.S. in international play.

The 2010 U.S. National Team is stacked with talent at every position, including former WHEA student-athletes Kacey Bellamy (UNH) and Karen Thatcher (PC). Bellamy was most recently the Most Valuable Player of 2009 WHEA Tournament this past March, held at UNH. Also on the roster are current WHEA athletes Molly Schaus (Natick, Mass.) and Kelli Stack (Brooklyn Heights, Ohio) from Boston College. Both athletes were First-Team WHEA All-Stars last season and Stack took home her second Cammi Granato Player of the Year Award (2007,2009) in the last three years.

Team USA has already defeated the WCHA All-Stars, 6-1, on Sept. 25 and North Dakota on Oct. 10 by a score of 11-1. The U.S. National Team will also take on the ECACHL All-Stars on Sunday, January 3 on the campus of Quinnipac University at the TD Banknorth Sports Center in Hamden, Conn (2pm).

Face-off for the All-Star contest is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22. Tickets are available at the Whittemore Center box office, through www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 1-800-745-3000. Ticket prices are $9 for adults and $5 for students.
