~UConn takes two from Maine; BU, Vermont split series in Burlington~

WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- Five teams celebrated the 4th annual “Skating Strides for Breast Cancer”
games this weekend. Providence moved back into first place with two wins vs. Boston College, while
extending their unbeaten streak to ten games. UConn and Northeastern swept their weekend series
and defeated No. 4 UNH in a shootout, while Vermont and BU split a pair of games.
The Friars swept their home and home series against Boston College beginning on Saturday with
a 2-1 overtime victory at Schneider Arena. In Sunday’s matinee at Conte Forum, the Friars returned to
domination sweeping the series with a 6-3 decision. Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ont) combined
for 53 saves as the Friars reclaimed first place in the standings. Allie Thunstrom (Maplewood, Minn.)
led BC with a four-point weekend (2g,2a).
The Terriers started the week with a 3-1 victory over Boston College on Tuesday evening at
Walter Brown Arena. Melissa Haber (Toronto, Ont.) led BU with 21 saves in net. On Friday, BU traveled
to Vermont for a pair of games in Burlington. The Catamounts won on Friday with an exciting 2-1
overtime victory. With just 42 seconds into overtime, Peggy Wakeham (Bay Roberts, Nfld.) scored the
power-play game-winning goal. BU rebounded on Saturday with a 3-2 decision to split the series.
No. 4 UNH played their only game of the week with a 2-2 tie against Northeastern on Wednesday.
After a scoreless overtime the game moved to a shootout where Northeastern’s freshman Rachel
Llanes (San Jose, Calif.) potted the game-winner in round four. UNH outshot the Huskies 30-23 but
Northeastern earned the extra point in the standings, marking their first points vs. the Wildcats since
the league was formed in the fall of 2002.
In the first of two games UConn skated past Maine with a 4-1 victory on Friday night at Mark
Edward Freitas Ice Forum. The Huskies jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first period. Although the
Black Bears were able to cut the lead to one at the start of the second period, it was not enough to
stop the Huskies. Kelly Horan (Methuen, Mass.) added two goals in the win. On Saturday the Huskies
earned a victory again with a 2-1 win. Maine’s Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) made 35 stops for
the Black Bears in the losing effort.
No. 7 Northeastern returned to action on a road trip with a two game sweep over Niagara. On
Saturday the Huskies skated to a 2-1 win followed by a decisive 6-2 victory on Sunday. With the win
Northeastern moves to 8-1-0 against non-conference opponents.

Boston College: The Eagles will travel to Dartmouth on Wednesday, Jan. 27 to take on the Big Green at
7:00 p.m. The Eagles lost the previous matchup with Dartmouth 4-0 on November 4, 2008…Senior forward Allie
Thunstrom registered her 126 career point for the Eagles in the 3-1 loss to BU on Tuesday, Jan. 19. She is now in
sole possession of fifth place on BC’s all-time points list, surpassing Laura Traynham ’97. Thunstrom also moved
closer to taking the lead in goals scored for Hockey East. Her 15 for the season are only one shy of the 16 scored
by Connecticut’s Michelle Binning…Freshman Blake Bolden (Euclid, Ohio) moved into a tie for third place in the
league’s scoring amongst defensemen with 4-9-13 totals for the season. She is also in tenth place for freshmen
scoring in Hockey East as well, two points behind fellow Eagle Ashley Motherwell’s (St. Charles, Ill.) 5-10-15.
Boston University: BU recorded two shorthanded goals in the first period in a 3-2 win at Vermont, the
first two shorthanded goals of the season…With the loss to Vermont on Friday, Jan.22, the Terriers maintain their
losing record in Friday contests, posting a 2-4-3 mark on Fridays…However, BU improved to 5-1-3 on Saturday’s
with a win over Vermont on Jan. 23…With a 3-1 win over Boston College, the Terriers recorded the season series
win over the Eagles for the first time since the 2007-08 season, when BU recorded three wins against the Eagles,
including a victory in the Beanpot…The loss to Vermont is just the second loss to the Catamounts in BU team
history…Melissa Anderson (Langley, B.C.) took over the team lead in points with two goals on the week and
now leads the Terriers with 24 points on the season
University of Connecticut: The Huskies continued their season streak as well as their series streak
with a pair of wins over Maine at Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum this weekend. UConn surpassed the Black
Bears in both games and extended its unbeaten streak to seven games, having not lost a game to Maine since
the 2005-06 season. In addition, UConn is unbeaten in the last six Hockey East games entering next weekends
regular-season series finales at Boston University and against Vermont. Senior Michelle Binning saw her scoring
streak snapped on Sunday although she contributed her team-best 16th of the season on Saturday while it was
freshman Kelly Horan with a pair who lifted the Huskies over the Black Bears. Junior Jennifer Chaisson extended
her scoring streak with a three-point (1G,2A) weekend at Freitas to six games.
University of Maine: Maine dropped a pair of WHEA contests at #8 UConn on Friday and Saturday. The
Black Bears lost Friday night’s game 4-1, getting their lone goal from senior Lexie Hoffmeyer (Grand Blanc,
Mich.). Fellow senior Taryn Peacock picked up her 14th assist on the goal, which is a new career high for her.
The goal was the eighth power play goal for the Black Bears this season. Maine also gave up a goal on the power
play, the first time they had done so since the Nov. 27 game at North Dakota. On Saturday, the Black Bears
lost a close matchup by the score of 2-1. Kaitlin Zeek (Wallingford, Conn.) scored her first goal of the season,
her second of her career, in the contest for Maine. Hoffmeyer notched her 12th assist on the Zeek goal and
now stands just two assists shy of tying her career high of 14 assists in a season. Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores,
Mich.) was solid in net for Maine as she made 35 saves, which marks the eighth time this season that Ott has
recorded 30 or more saves in a game.
University of New Hampshire: The 14-game point-scoring streak by Micaela Long is the longest by
a Wildcat in a single season since ’08 (Sadie Wright-Ward; 14 games)…With 35 points apiece, both Long and
Kelly Paton (Woodstock, Ont.) have factored in half of the team’s 70 goals…Julie Allen (Brampton, Ont.) has
scored a goal in four of the last six game…UNH has played five overtime games this season, and all five have
ended in a tie…The Wildcats have a 22-game unbeaten streak (5-0-17) in OT dating back to Nov. 2005…UNH
has a 20-game unbeaten streak (5-0-15) in overtime home games dating back to Nov. 2003…The ‘Cats are 0-2
in shootouts this year and 1-5 in two seasons…UNH extended its unbeaten streak vs. Northeastern to 27 games
(26-0-1) with the tie…UNH is 11-0-2 when recording 30+ shots in a game.
Northeastern University: With the Huskies’ tie (and subsequent shootout win) at No. 4 UNH on Jan.
20, Northeastern took points from the Wildcats for the first time since the inception of Women’s Hockey East on
Wednesday. The Wildcats had won 26 straight against NU until Wednesday’s tie...With her three-point weekend,
Junior Kristi Kehoe (Bakersfield, Calif.) has five goals and six assists in six career games vs. Niagara...Four of
the Huskies’ next six games are against Boston University, including the opening round of the Beanpot on Feb.
2...Northeastern is one win shy of 500 in program history (499-319-67 all-time)...Northeastern is 8-1-0 against
non-conference foes this season...Northeastern is 9-1-2 on the road this season
Providence College: Providence won both games this weekend and is now undefeated in its last 10 games…
The Friars have won seven straight games for the first time since the 2002-03 season…The last time a PC team
had an unbeaten streak longer than 10 games was an 11-game streak during the 1991-92 season…During the
10-game unbeaten streak, PC has outscored its opponents 14-2 in the first period and stands at +76…Juniors
Alyse Ruff and Jean O’Neill (Strafford, Pa.) lead the team with 15 and 13 points, respectively, during the past
10 games…The Friars defeated BC 6-3 on Sunday and have now scored six goals on three separate occasions
this season…Five different players scored for PC on Sunday.
University of Vermont: UVM split a weekend series with Boston U at Gutterson Fieldhouse...Vermont’s
2-1 win over BU on Friday marked only the second win in school history against the Terriers...Both wins were
one goal decisions at Gutterson Fieldhouse, with the other win coming last year when BU was ranked No. 6 in
the nation...Junior Peggy Wakeham scored the game-winning goal in overtime...It was her first game-winning
goal of the year...Senior Jackie Thode recorded her first goal of the season this weekend as well as her first
back-to-back games recording a point...The Catamounts continued to surge in the second period this year scoring
19 total goals in the middle period...Vermont returns to action this weekend with games on the road against
Providence and Connecticut.
