Pure Hockey Player of the Week Melissa Haber of Boston University

WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- The Boston University Terriers captured their first ever Women's Hockey East Championship and extended their season into the NCAA tournament for the first time in their five-year program existence. Both top seeds were upset in the semifinals, as UConn defeated Providence 3-2 and BU shutout UNH 4-0 before winning the championship on Sunday.

The fifth-seeded Connecticut Huskies upset the Hockey East regular-season league champions and top-seeded Providence Friars in a 3-2 victory Saturday afternoon at Schneider Arena. The Huskies jumped to an early lead with momentum in their favor thanks to a three-goal first period. Not ready for their season to end, seniors Michelle Binning (Oshawa, Ont.) and Amy Hollstein (Pembroke, Mass.) led the way registering a goal and an assist apiece. Providence didn't back down and came back flying outshooting the Huskies 19-2 in the second period and cutting the lead to one goal but stellar defense by the Huskies lifted them to the 3-2 victory and advanced them to their first Hockey East championship game since 2005.

BU knocked off last year's Hockey East defending Champions, the UNH Wildcats with a 4-0 shutout in the second semifinal game on Saturday afternoon. Despite the lopsided score, the game was as close as ever and could have gone either way until three late third period goals gave the terriers the edge. Laurel Koller (St. Paul, Minn.) put the Terriers on the board early in the second with a short-handed goal. UNH had plenty of chances to score but luck was not in their favor and BU snuck back in with three last minute goals, two from senior Melissa Anderson (Langley, B.C.). Terrier goaltender Melissa Haber stopped all 17 shot that came her way, handing the Wildcats their first shutout of the season.

In the Championship game on Sunday, BU earned their first WHEA Title Championship as both teams left it all on the ice after a grueling battle and stellar goaltending on both ends. BU scored first on a power play goal from freshman Kathryn Miller (Milverton, Ont.), but UConn rebounded with momentum swinging their way and matched the score when Michelle Binning (Oshawa, Ont.) netted her 20th tally of the season. BU's Tara Watchorn (Newcastle, Ont.) and Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week, broke the sudden death overtime after she buried the game-winner at 9:52 in the overtime period. UConn goaltender Alexandra Garcia (Pointe-Claire, Q.C.) stopped 31 shots but it was BU's Melissa Haber who took home Tournament Most Valuable Player honors with 25 saves leading the Terriers to their first WHEA Championship.

With the win, the Terriers advance into the NCAA Tournament and face the No. 1 overall seed and CHA Tournament Champion Mercyhurst on Saturday, March 13 at 2pm in Erie, Pa. at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. UNH also earned a spot in the post-season and will continue their season against Minnesota-Duluth in a NCAA quarterfinal game to be played March 13 (3 p.m. Eastern) at the DECC.
