MAINE FALLS TO MERCYHURST, 8-1

Orono, Maine -- Despite getting an early lead in the game the University of Maine women's ice hockey team could not overcome five power-play goals by Mercyhurst. Freshman Taryn Peacock (Calgary, Alberta) scored the lone goal for the Black Bears in the 8-1 loss to Mercyhurst. With the loss the Black Bears falls to 0-2-0 overall, while Mercyhurst improves to 2-0-0.

The Black Bears got on the board first with a goal just 39 seconds into the game by Peacock, her second of the season. Earning her second assist of the season on that goal was Vanessa Vani (St. Catherines, Ontario). Mercyhurst was able to take the lead with three goals in the first period. Stephanie Bourbeau notched a goal at 12:33 of the first. Meghan Agosta was credited with the game-winning goal, a power-play goal, at 10:02 of the period. Julia Colizza scored the Laker's third goal of the first, a power-play goal.

Mercyhurst's Valerie Chouinard tallied three goals in the game, including one in the second, which was the only scoring of the period. The period was filled with 11 penalties for 22 minutes. The Black Bears had five power-play chances, but were unable to capitalize on any.

The Lakers notched two more power-play goals in the final frame to make them five for eight on power play opportunities. Colizza earned her second goal of the game on the first power-play goal. Choinard notched two more goals in the period, giving her the hattrick. Stephanie Jones earned Mercyhurst's eighth goal of the game with 1:10 remaining.

Sophomore goaltender Genevieve Turgeon (Lac Beauport, Quebec) got her second start on the season, making 26 saves. Laker goalie Laura Hoiser made 16 saves in the game, including 11 in the second.

Maine will travel out west to play host Minnesota and Bemidji State in the "Easton Shootout" tournament on Friday, October 6 at 7 pm and Saturday, October 7 at 4 pm.
