PROVIDENCE EDGED BY ST. LAWRENCE, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The women's hockey team opened its regular season on Saturday, October 14 at home against fourth-ranked Saint Lawrence. The Saints took a 2-1 victory on a game-winning goal by Alison Domenico (Nepean, Ont.) midway through the third period. Sophomore Katy Beach (Cleveland, Ohio) scored the lone Providence goal in the loss.

Saint Lawrence got on the board 12 minutes into the contest on a power-play. Sophomore Carson Duggan (Ma-Me-O Beach, Alta.) found the back of the net for her third goal of the season on assists from juniors Sabrina Harbec (St. Hubert, Que.) and Annie Guay (Rouyn-Noranda, Que.). Beach evened the score at 1-1 three minutes later on a pass from senior Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.).

The game remained tied throughout the second period and midway through the third until Domenico fired a one-timer from junior Kerri Wallace (Rocky Mountain House, Alta.) into the back of the net. The Friars had a couple of chances down the stretch but were denied by junior goaltender Meaghan Guckian (Victor, N.Y.) who finished the day with 29 saves. Senior goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) had 33 saves for Providence.

Providence will host Colgate on Sunday, October 15 at 1:00 p.m.
