Connecticut rolls past Bluewater Hawks, 10-1

Dominique Thibault picked up a hat trick for the Huskies.

STORRS, Connecticut (September 29, 2007) - The University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team used a six goal first period to cruise to a 10-1 win over the Bluewater Junior Hawks Saturday afternoon. Freshman Jennifer Chaisson (Cumberland, Ontario) and sophomore Dominique Thibault (L'Orignal, Ont.) recorded hat tricks for UConn. This was the Huskies only exhibition game of the season.

Chaisson recorded her hat trick in the first period. She scored the opening goal at the 1:20 mark, receiving the assists from Amy Hollstein (Pembroke, Mass.) and Michelle Binning (Oshawa, Ont.). She also scored the fourth goal of the game on a power play at the 6:42 mark, and took advantage of a Bluewater turnover to record her third goal of the game at the 12:12 mark, and make the score 5-0. Also scoring in the first period were senior Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ont.) at the 2:20 mark, Nicole Tritter (Toronto, Ont.) at the 4:53 mark, and Thibault at the 14:19 mark. UConn out shot Bluewater 15-4 in the first period.

The second period was much quieter with no goals and a 5-2 shot advantage for Connecticut. The Huskies made a goaltender switch midway through the period to give backup goalie Jennie Bellonio (Guilford, Conn.) some action. Starter Brittany Wilson (Nepean, Ont.) finished with five saves on five shots in 29:15.

The Huskies resumed the offensive onslaught very quickly in the third. Thibault one-timed a pass from Kristen Russell (Dauphin, Man.) to make it 7-0. After the Hawks got on the board, Brianna Uliasz (Chalfont, Pa.) scored off a rebound to make it 8-1. UConn concluded the scoring with a power play goal from Hawkins at the 10:25 mark, and Thibault recording the hat trick at the 12:13 mark. The Huskies out shot Bluewater 21-4 in the third period.

For the game UConn out shot the Hawks 41-10. The Huskies were two for nine on the power play and held Bluewater to zero for three on their power play attempts. Chaisson led the way at plus four for the day, and Bellonio recorded four saves.

Connecticut begins the regular season next Friday when they host Ohio State. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Freitas Ice Forum.
