Vermont falls to Bemidji, 3-2

Bemidji, Minn. - Bemidji State held off a late Vermont charge to skate to a 3-2 win in women's college hockey Sunday afternoon at John Glas Fieldhouse. The WCHA Beavers, who won 4-1 on Saturday, completed a weekend sweep over UVM with the victory.

After Tara Hiscock's power play goal at 9:21 of the third period gave BSU a 3-1 advantage, Vermont drew within one on a power play of its own less than a minute later. Peggy Wakeham (Bay Roberts, Newfoundland) scored her second of the season on an assist from Hannah Westbrook (Laramie, Wyoming) at 10:33. UVM increased its pressure out-shooting the Beavers, 11-6, in the final stanza. Bemidji State killed off a final extra-skater advantage with 3:03 remaining to close out the Catamounts.

BSU's Julie Rising opened the scoring with her fourth of the season just 2:10 into the contest. Celeste Doucet (Memramcook, New Brunswick) converted a feed from Teddy Fortin (Brunswick, Maine) for a power play goal to tie it a 1-1 at 6:19. With less than two minutes remaining in the first period, Lisa Kissack, on an assist from Jessica Tyra, gave the Beavers a 2-1 lead.

With several good chances in the final period, Vermont finished with a 27-25 advantage in shots for the game. Both teams had two power play goals as UVM went 2-for-7 and the Beavers cashed in on two of their four opportunites. All three Vermont goals in the two-game series came on the power play after it had not tallied one in its 10 previous contests.

In her second start of the season, UVM junior goalie Ashley Walenty (Lake Placid, N.Y.) stopped 21 shots while Jennifer Bauer made 25 saves to pick up her first victory of the season for Bemidji State (3-14-3).

The Catamounts (4-11-1) return home to open a four-game homestand ringing in the New Year hosting Clarkson, Saturday and Sunday, January 5-6, 2008, at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
