Providence, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team was defeated by Boston College, 3-1. The Eagles tallied three unanswered third period goals to remain undefeated. Providence now stands at 2-5-0 (1-2-0 HOCKEY EAST), while Boston College improves to 3-0-2 (1-0-1 HOCKEY EAST).
Providence got on the board first at 12:07 of the initial period. While defending an Eagle power play, senior assistant captain Katy Beach (Cleveland, Ohio) blocked a shot and took off towards the BC cage. Beach tried to maneuver around Eagle netminder Molly Schaus but was denied by a sliding save with the right pad. Freshman Kate Bacon (Chanhassen, Minn.) came flying in to slam home the loose puck. The short-handed goal was the first of her career. Beach earned the assist on the play, her second of the season.
Neither team was able to score the rest of the period as the Friars went into the locker room up, 1-0, after 20 minutes of play. Friar netminder Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) finished the period with 11 saves while Schaus denied 12 shots.
Neither team was able to score in the second period as both goalies denied any quality scoring chances. Boston College failed to capitalize on three Providence penalties while the Friars were unable to put any of their 13 shots past Schaus. At the end of two periods, PC led, 26-20, in shots on target.
Boston College evened the score 3:59 into the second period. Senior Meghan Fardelmann received a pass from freshman Mary Restuccia and skated into the Friars' defensive zone. With a defender draped on her back, Fardelmann was able to lift a back-handed shot over the left shoulder of Lacasse for her first goal of the season.
Boston College would go ahead for good at 7:10. The Eagles cycled the puck around from the left corner of the Friar zone. Senior Becky Zavisza sent a pass to Tracy Johnson who fired the puck towards the Providence cage. Lacasse made the initial save but the rebound fell right in front. BC senior Lauren Wiedmeier was the first to reach the loose puck and slipped it into the empty net for her second goal of the season.
Boston College would add an empty-net goal with only 16 seconds remaining. Johnson picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and sent it into the empty Friar net for her first goal of the season.
Providence netminder Genevieve Lacasse finished with 27 saves but falls to 2-3 on the season while Boston College goaltender Molly Schaus stopped 34 shots to improve to 3-0-2.
The Friars return to action Sunday, October 26 when they host the University of Maine. The game will be played at 2:00 p.m. in Schneider Arena.
