PROVIDENCE FALLS TO BROWN IN MAYOR'S CUP, 5-1

Abby Gauthier scored the lone goal for the Friars

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College (3-3-2, 2-0-0 HE) women's hockey team hosted Brown University (1-1-0, 0-0-0 ECAC) in the 15th Annual Mayor's Cup at Schneider Arena on Sunday and fell by a score of 5-1. Five-straight unanswered goals by Brown led the way as Bears goaltender Katie Jamieson made 31 saves. Sophomore Abby Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) scored for PC while sophomore Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) finished with 17 saves in the loss.

During the first period in which the Friars consistently possessed the puck in the Brown zone, Bears goaltender Katie Jamieson was called into action 19 times. Jamieson was up to the task in every attempt until Providence opened the scoring at 11:27. Sophomore Christie Jensen's (Delta, B.C.) slap shot from the right point was deflected in front by Gauthier to put PC up, 1-0. The goal was Gauthier's second of the season with Jensen earning her second assist. Freshman Nicole Anderson (Jordan, Minn.) earned her first assist of the season on the play as well.

The Friars nearly doubled their lead at 17:40 but a shot from Providence senior Arianna Rigano (Malden, Mass.) in the slot was denied by the outstretched glove of Jamieson. It looked as though Brown would get on the board at 19:37 when the Friars turned the puck over in the defensive zone, but Lacasse was able deny a Brown shot from just inside the left face off circle. The period ended with Providence owning an edge in shots, 19-8.

Brown came out for the second and evened the score just 1:10 into the period with an unassisted goal from Erica Farrer. The Friars kept the score tied, 1-1, thanks to a Lacasse save on a Brown breakaway at 14:53. Neither team scored again in the second even though PC still held the edge in shots, 27-15.

The Bears took the lead for good with a pair of goals from Erin Connors in the first eight minutes of the third period and never looked back. Brown forwards Laurie Jolin and Alena Polenska added goals to close out the scoring with Brown ahead, 5-1.

Following the game, Providence Mayor David Cicillini presented the Mayor's Cup to Brown senior Nicole Brown.

The Friars are in action next weekend with a pair of Hockey East games on Saturday and Sunday. The Friars will host No. 9 Boston University on Saturday, October 31 at 2:00 p.m. before traveling to face Connecticut on Sunday at 4:00 p.m..
