CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Two combination goals between Kelli Stack and Mary Restuccia gave the Boston College women's hockey team the edge to hold on to a 2-1 win over No. 3 Boston University to advance to the 33rd Annual Women's Beanpot Championship game. Stack's two points totaled 199 in her career, enough to break the previous all-time record and become BC's new Career Points leader.
"I'm really excited for our team I thought our kids worked extremely hard through three periods," Head Coach Katie King said. "We were able to get the job done and did what it took to come out with a win. That is a great team over there and our kids did a really good job."
With three seconds remaining in the opening frame, Kelli Stack fed a pass to Mary Restuccia at the top of the crease, who slipped the goal in between BU goaltender Kerrin Sperry's pads.
Defense held it together for the Eagles in the second period, with several key saves from goaltender Molly Schaus who faced 10 hard shots from the Terriers, including a one-on-one against Louise Warren in the 12th minute and two hard slapshots in the last two minutes of the period.
Stack netted the game-winning goal at 5:36 of the final frame, feeding off a pass from Restuccia in front of the goal to send it home.
"Mary's one of the best playmakers I have ever played with I knew that if I stayed out high in the slot I would get the puck," Stack said. "Sure enough it was right on my tape, all I had to do was fire it."
BU retaliated with its first score of the game at 6:13 but the Eagles were able to hold onto the lead.
"(Schaus is) a great goaltender and she really showed that today," King said. "She came up big for us at times. She is very aware and knows where the other team is almost at all times. She had quite a few shots at the end there with those power plays they got and she did a great job."
Schaus recorded 33 saves, including 15 in the third period. BU outshot BC 34-14.
The Eagles will face Northeastern in the Beanpot Championship on Tuesday, February 15 at Kelley Rink. Next up, they will host Maine in a two-game weekend series with games Friday, February 11 and Saturday, February 12, both at 7:00 p.m.
