Junior defenseman Rebecca Hewett scored the only goal of the game for the Huskies

STORRS, Conn. - Rebecca Hewett (Oak Bluff, Manitoba) recorded her second goal of the season in the middle of the first period and Alexandra Garcia (Pointe-Claire, Que.) posted 21 saves en route to her second consecutive shutout as the Huskies defeated Vermont, 1-0 this afternoon in the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum.

The Huskies are now 10-13-1 on the season and 6-4-1 in Hockey East play, while the Catamounts fall to 5-11-9 overall and 1-8-4 in conference action.

Garcia kept the Catamounts off the board for the third time this season as the Huskies outscored Vermont 5-0 over the three games this year. Today's contest marked her fourth shutout of the season and she now has 585 saves on the year for a .914 save percentage.

Hewett's game-winner came at the 14:04 mark of the opening period when she drilled a shot over Roxanne Douville's shoulder into the back of the net from the top of the left faceoff circle on a UConn power play. Alexandra Vakos (Hamden, Conn.) passed the puck out to Hewett from the bottom of the faceoff circle after Kelly Horan (Methuen, Mass.) found her from the bottom of the slot.

Sami Evelyn (Nepean, Ont.) tried to give the Huskies a 2-0 advantage late in the second period when she sent the puck towards the net from the left faceoff circle, but it rang off of the crossbar, keeping the score at 1-0.

Despite having four power play opportunities, the Catamounts were never able to capitalize on the skater advantage posting just five shots on net during those chances. Vermont pressured for the equalizer with less than one minute left in the game when they pulled their goalie for the extra skater, but couldn't manage to get anything moving offensively and the Huskies came away with the 1-0 victory.

UConn returns to action next weekend when they travel to Orono, Maine for a two-game series against the Maine Black Bears. The Huskies will open the weekend with a 5:00 p.m. contest on Friday (Jan. 21) and will complete the season series against the Black Bears on Saturday (Jan. 22) at 12:00 noon.
