Sophomore forward Brittany Dougherty had a goal and an assist for Maine

NIAGARA UNIV., NY - The Women's Hockey team scored three second period goals en route to a 3-1 victory of Niagara University on Friday evening. The Black Bears pick up their first road win of the season and move to 4-3-0 on the season while Niagara falls to 0-4-1. The Black Bears got one goal a piece from Jennie Gallo (Castlegar, B.C.), Brittany Dougherty (Chesterfield, Mich.), and Myriam Croussette (Bair-Comeau, Quebec).

After a scoreless first period of play, Gallo got the Black Bears on the scoreboard with her seventh goal of the season. Dominique Goutsis(Coquitlam, B.C.) slid a pass to Gallo who controlled the puck and beat Niagara goaltender Sarah Moses to put Maine up 1-0.

Dougherty would find the back of the net 10:18 to give Maine a 2-0 edge. Ashley Norum (Fairbanks, Alaska) assisted on the goal for the Black Bears.

Croussette would extend the Black Bear lead to 3-0, 14:24 into the second period when she beat Moses for her fourth score of the season. Dougherty tallied her sixth assist of the season on the goal for Maine.

Erica Owczarczak added a goal for Niagara, her first of the season, to cut the Maine lead to 3-1. Jessica Hitchcoc added her first assist of the season for Niagara. Maine would hold on for the final 7:42 to take the victory, 3-1.

Maine's goaltender Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) was solid in net for Maine, picking up her third victory of the season after making 18 stops. Moses drops to 0-1 on the season as she made 21 saves for Niagara.

The Black Bears held the final edge in shots, 24-19. Both teams were scoreless on the power play as Maine was 0-5 and Niagara was 0-3.

The two teams close out the series tomorrow afternoon with a 2 p.m. puck drop scheduled.
