PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team continued a trend of high, offensive output, defeating visiting Maine, 7-4, Sunday at Schneider Arena.
When taking into account a 9-3 victory over Yale Tuesday and Saturday's 3-3 tie with the Black Bears, the Friars registered 19 goals in one week.
Saturday, Providence was led by a special teams unit that went 3 for 4 on the power play.
The key period was the second. Maine knotted the game, 2-2, at 3:00 of the middle period when Tori Pasquariello scored on a breakaway. Roughly nine minutes later, the Friars answered with their own rush, as sophomore Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) skated with speed into the slot and converted a wrist shot from the right side for her fourth of the season and a 3-2, PC lead.
Still in the second, Providence extended the cushion to 4-2 at 16:49. Towards the end of a Friar power play consisting of heavy pressure, sophomore Rebecca Morse blasted home her first of the season from the left point.
In the third period, Providence inflated the lead to 7-2, courtesy an even strength score by junior Jessica Cohen (Anchorage, Alaska), and power play strikes from sophomore Maggie Pendleton (Woodbury, Minn.) and junior Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario).
Maine's Chloe Tinkler and Myriam Crousette each added a late goal to round out the scoring at 7-4.
Initially, Maine had taken a 1-0 edge just 3:09 into the game, when freshman Jennifer More banged home a Dominique Goutsis pass to the right of the crease. Providence answered eight seconds later, as freshman Allison Micheletti (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) converted on her second of the season, switching from forehand to backhand just to the left of the slot.
At 11:18 of the first, fellow freshman Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.) capitalized on a brilliant pass up ice from Buie. Hanrahan skated in with a partial breakaway and made it 2-1 Friars heading into the first intermission.
In goal, sophomore Nina Riley (Lexington, Mass.) collected her second victory of the week, halting 27 shots. Freshman Hillary Drake (Mosinee, Wisc.) also saw action, stopping four Black Bear attempts late in the third.
Maine's Brittany Ott and Kylie Smith stopped 28 and four shots, respectively.
The Friars outshot the visitors, 39-35.
Providence return to action on Saturday, November 12 when they visit Hockey East rival UConn for a 1 p.m. face-off. Providence College's next home game is Sunday, November 13. New Hampshire will visit for a 2 p.m. start and tickets are available by calling (401) 865 GOPC or by visiting Friars.com.
