PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's hockey team erupted for nine goals, including one shorthanded, en route to a 9-3 victory over Yale Tuesday night at Schneider Arena.
Friars Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.), Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.) and Kate Bacon (Chanhassen, Minn.) all scored two goals, while senior Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.) accounted for a goal and three assists to match a career-high for points in a game.
Also of note, sophomore goaltender Nina Riley (Lexington, Mass.) recorded her first collegiate victory in net, stopping 22 shots. Freshman Hillary Drake (Mosinee, Wisc.) also saw time in the Friar crease, collecting her first collegiate save late in the third period.
The game was knotted, 3-3 early in the second period when the Friars' offense took over. At 6:50, freshman Allison Micheletti (Inver Grove Hieghts, Minn.) carried into the offensive zone. As she was engaged by a defender, Buie scooped up the puck, attacked the net, and slid home a backhander for her second goal of the year and a 4-3, Providence edge.
Roughly seven minutes later, at 13:31 and the Friars on the power play, sophomore Rebecca Morse fired a shot from the high slot. The puck deflected to the right of the net where it was greeted by an awaiting Bacon. The Friars' leading scorer a year ago made it 5-3 with a shot that beat the goalie glove-side.
Providence stretched the cushion to 6-3 at the 17:21 mark of the period. Senior defenseman Christie Jensen intercepted a pass well in front of the Yale Blueline, skated into the slot and deposited her second of the year top shelf. 6-3 Friars after two periods.
Veharanta then netted a pair midway through the third period, including a short-handed strike that was set up by terrific stick work through traffic by Cottrell. Buie rounded out the scoring with her second of the game at 15:39.
Providence led, 3-2, after the first period, courtesy scores by senior Abby Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) Bacon, and freshman Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md) before the Bulldogs rallied to tie.
