Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The No. 4 Boston College women's ice hockey team (1-2-0, 1-2-0 Hockey East) responded from a 4-3 defeat on Saturday with a 5-2 victory Sunday over the UNH Wildcats (3-2-0, 1-2-0 Hockey East) for their first win of the season.

Haley Skarupa recorded her first two collegiate goals and Corinne Boyles made 18 saves for her first victory of the season and 30th of her career.

The Eagles got the opening tally at the 4:12 mark of the first period as sophomore Kate Leary notched her first goal of the season with an assist by Taylor Wasylk. BC managed to kill off two UNH power plays while only allowing one shot over that span. Corinne Boyles made nine saves while Vilma Vaattovaara stopped nine of 10 in the opening frame for the Wildcats. Shots were at 10-9 in favor of BC after 20 minutes.

Both teams tightened up defensively in the second period as UNH and BC combined for only 12 shots in the second stanza. With Jackie Young whistled off for cross-checking, Alex Carpenter sent Haley Skarupa on a breakaway and she beat Vaattovaara on a backhand deke to put BC up 2-0 at 12:09. Corinne Boyles stopped all four shots she faced while Vaattovaara stopped seven of eight shots. BC outshot UNH 18-13 after 40 minutes of play.

The offenses reigned supreme in the third period as the teams combined for five goals in the final frame. Kristine Horn cut the Eagles lead to 2-1 at the 39 second mark. BC responded with a power play goal by Ashley Motherwell and Kristina Brown's first goal of the season two minutes later. The Wildcats cut the lead to 4-2 on a goal by Jessica Hitchcock at 15:36. The Eagles had to kill off a late penalty and stave off a Wildcats flurry of chances with goaltender Vilma Vaattovaara pulled for an extra skater. Skarupa added an empty net goal with 24 seconds left to give the Eagles a 5-2 victory.

Notes: Carpenter lead the Eagles with five shots on goal ... Vaattovaara stopped 22 shots for the Wildcats ... Taylor Wasylk, Blake Bolden, and Jackie Young were a team best +2 ... Power Plays: Eagles 1-4, Wildcats 1-6.

BC will return to action on next Thursday as they play host to the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs at 7 p.m.
