BOSTON - Paced by a four-point afternoon from senior Isabel Menard and a three-point effort from junior co-captain Marie-Philip Poulin, the No. 3 Boston University women's ice hockey team defeated No. 2 Cornell, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon at Walter Brown Arena.

The Terriers salvaged a split of the weekend series with Cornell, as the Big Red won the first game, 5-2, at Agganis Arena on Saturday night. BU (5-1-0, 2-0-0 WHEA) scored the final five goals of the game after Cornell (1-1-0, 0-0-0 ECAC) took a 1-0 lead early in the second period.

Second-ranked Cornell is the highest ranked team the Terriers have defeated in a regular-season contest. BU also defeated No. 3/4 Boston College and No. 8/9 Northeastern this season, with both those wins coming on the road.

Senior Jenelle Kohanchuk's second goal of the year was sandwiched between two goals each from Poulin and Menard, while juniors Louise Warren, Shannon Doyle and Kaleigh Fratkin each had a hand in at least one of the goals. Junior Kerrin Sperry stopped 22 shots to earn her fifth win of the year.

After a scoreless first period, Cornell capitalized on its second power play chance of the afternoon. Laura Fortino scored the goal, with assists credited to Jillian Saulnier and Brianne Jenner at the 4:18 mark of the stanza.

The Terriers' response was swift, as Menard tied the game 58 seconds later. Doyle got the puck to Warren along the right half-wall, who then dished it to Menard. The senior forward stepped into the right circle and sent a wrist shot past Lauren Slebodnick (31 saves).

Poulin put BU up, 2-1, with 20 seconds remaining in the middle frame. Fratkin blocked a shot and Poulin picked the puck up in her own end, made a nifty move past a Big Red skater, and proceeded to pass the puck to Menard. Menard raced up the left wing and sent a cross-zone pass to Poulin, who cashed near the right post.

Kohanchuk made it a 3-1 lead just 2:53 into the third period. Poulin gloved down a Cornell clearing attempt at the top of the zone and quickly got the puck to Menard, who rushed a cross-ice pass to Kohanchuk in the right circle. The senior forward fired a shot into the net for her second goal of the season.

The score remained 3-1 until the final two minutes of the period. Menard made it 4-1 with 1:59 remaining in regulation after she got a loose puck in her own zone and sped past everyone for a breakway chance before depositing the puck past Slebodnick for her third goal of the year.

Poulin concluded the scoring 25 seconds after Menard's second goal when she intercepted a pass in the Cornell zone and had an easy look at the net. It was Poulin's third goal of the season.

The Terriers will continue their homestand on Friday (Oct. 26) when they welcome Maine to Walter Brown Arena. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.
