Sophomore forward Kayla Campero had two goals and two assists for the Huskies

STORRS, Conn. - Early first period goals and 25 saves from freshman goaltender Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ont.) propelled the University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team to a 5-1 non-conference win over Princeton at the Freitas Ice Forum, Wednesday night. The win was the first for the Huskies (3-14-2) since October 26.

UConn raced out to a 3-1 lead by the end of the first period with goals from three different players. Sophomore Kayla Campero (Wallingford, Conn.) scored the first goal of the night, a little over a minute after the opening face-off, en route to a four-point performance. Freshman Michela Cava (Thunder Bay, Ont.) followed just one minute and 21 seconds later with her team-leading seventh of the season.

The Tigers (5-10-2) cut the lead to one at the 6:59 mark of the first when Alex Kinney, assisted by Kelly Cooke and Corey Stearns, knocked in her fourth goal of the season.

The third goal of the first for the Huskies came off the stick of freshman Brittany Berisoff (Kelowna, B.C.), assisted by Campero and senior Casey Knajdek (Woodbury, Minn.).

After a scoreless second period, Connecticut added to its lead with goals by Campero and Berisoff late in the third.

Making her first career start, Ashley Holt made 18 saves for Princeton as the Tigers outshot the Huskies 26-23. Both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play.

Connecticut and Princeton are set for a rematch tomorrow night at 7:00 pm.
