Sophomore forward Rachel Farrel scored a power-play goal for the Huskies

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team dropped its season opener at Union, 3-2, Saturday afternoon. The Huskies held a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period, but allowed goals near the midway point of both the second and third periods.

Sophomore forward Rachel Farrel (Cheshire, Conn.) netted the first goal of the game, a power play score assisted by classmate Emily Snodgrass (Eagan, Minn.), midway through the first. The Dutchwomen answered at the 13:26 mark when Jessica Kaminsky posted a power play goal of her own.

UConn regained the lead with just seven seconds left in the period on a power play goal by sophomore Caitlin Hewes (Stillwater, Minn.). Sophomore Kayla Campero (Wallingford, Conn.) and freshman Michela Cava (Thunder Bay, Ont.) assisted on the score.

In the second period, Union brought the game to an even 2-2 score at the 9:24 mark on the game's first even-strength goal as Emma Rambo found the back of the net. The game-winning goal came on the Dutchwomen's second power play goal of the game when Christine Valente scored at the 9:41 mark.

In her first career start, freshman goaltender Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ont.) made 27 saves, while Alana Marcinki stopped 30 shots for Union.

For the game, the Huskies outshot the Dutchwomen 32-30.

Connecticut gets back on the ice next weekend at RPI with games on Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
