Junior forward Brittany Esposito scored two goals for the Huskies

Orono, Maine - The University of Maine women' ice hockey team fell to #10 Northeastern University by a score of 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. A three goal third period sealed the game for the Huskies as they improve to 17-10-2, 9-7-1 in Hockey East while the Black Bears fall to 5-21-3, 2-14-2 in Hockey East.

Kendall Coyne notched the first goal of the game at 9:07 of the first period for the early 1-0 lead.

Kayla Kaluzny (Calgary, Alberta) evened the game at 1-1, as she was able to bury the puck for her second goal of the season at 15:09 of the first. Brittany Dougherty (Chesterfield, Michigan) carried the puck up the right side into the offensive zone, tried to center for the waiting Jennifer More (Deloraine, Manitoba) but More was unable to get a clean stick on it. As a scrum ensued in front of the goalie, Kaluzny was able to get her stick on the puck for the even strength goal. This marks More's eight assist while Dougherty registers her 18th.

Dougherty gave the Black Bears the 2-1 lead a little over four minutes later as she skated down the left side of the ice showing fantastic stick work as she froze the goalie and tucked the puck away in the top right of the net. Dougherty broke up a northeastern pass at the top of the zone; Kaluzny was able to get a stick on it to feed it back to Dougherty, as she quickly knew what to do with it. This marks Dougherty's 12th goal of the season while Kaluzny notched her eight assist.

The first period ends with a 2-1 Black Bear lead.

Brittany Esposito registered the only goal of the second period as she tied the game at 2-2 at the 12:59 mark of the period.

The second period ended with a 2-2 tie.

The Huskies registered three unanswered goals in the third period to take the 5-2 win. Esposito tallied her second of the game, Katie MacSorley registered her first of the game, and Coyne notched her second.

Kylie Smith (Apple Valley, Minnesota) got the start for the Black Bears between the pipes as she allowed five goals with 14 saves in 47:04 of play. Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Michigan) played the final 12:56, notching four saves. Smith sees her record fall to 0-3-0 on the season.

Maine held a 31-23 shot advantage over Northeastern. The Black Bears went 0-3 on the power play while the Huskies went 0-1.

Maine returns to action tomorrow afternoon as it hosts Northeastern for senior day. The Black Bears will honor Brittany Dougherty, Brittany Ott, Kylie Smith, and Chloe Tinkler. The puck is slated to drop at 2:00 PM.
