BLACK BEARS TOPPED BY BOSTON BLADES, 3-2

Senior forward Kayla Kaluzny had a power-play goal for the Black Bears

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine women's ice hockey team fell 3-2 to the Boston Blades on Sunday afternoon at Alfond Arena for an exhibition game of the 2013-14 season.Freshman Jess Vallotton (Glenboro, Manitoba) and senior Kayla Kaluzny (Calgary,Alberta) each had a goal for Maine.

The Black Bears battled to hold off the Blades with a 0-0 score at the end of first period.

The Blades were the first to score when Jillian Dempsey knocked it in on a pass from Blake Bolton at 1:07 into the second period.

The Black Bears answered when junior Katy Massey (Waterville, Maine) won the face-off and passed it back to freshman Jess Vallotton on the blue line at 2:47 into the second period. Her shot beat Blades goalie Brittany Ott.

Maine struck again at 19:00 into the second period. Emilie Brigham (Anoka, Minnesota) passed it to Kayla Kaluzny for a power play goal making it 2-1 at the end of the second period.

The Blades tied the game at 9:20 to go in the third period when Christie Jenson knocked the puck it past Maine goalie Mariah Fujimagari (Markham, Ontario) on a pass from Jillian Dempsey.

Boston sealed the win with a third goal at 12:39 into the third period when Casey Picket put one in the net on a pass from Jessica Koizumi.

Maine outshot the Blades 32-28 in the game Maine was 1-7 on power plays, while the Blades were scoreless in five chances. Fujimagari had 25 saves for the Black Bears. Brittany Ott made 16 saves in 25:59 and Alissa Fromkin made 14 saves in 34:01 for the Boston Blades.

The Black Bears head to Boston College on October 6th.
