CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Freshman forward Andie Anastos scored the game-winning goal, her third goal of the season, and goaltender Corinne Boyles made 32 saves to lead the No. 2 Boston College women's ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory over St. Lawrence Saturday afternoon at Kelley Rink.
Anastos gave the Eagles the lead for good at 12:47 of the final frame when she picked up a St. Lawrence turnover in the neutral zone, skated past the defense, and buried the puck in the back of the net to make the score 2-1. She has now scored in each of the team's first three games.
BC took a 1-0 lead at 3:46 of the middle stanza with a goal from Emily Field. The junior from Littleton, Mass. found a loose puck in front of the net and slid it between the pads of Saints netminder Giulia Mazzocchi and into the back of the net.
St. Lawrence answered with a power play goal from defenseman Dayle Wilkinson at 11:11 of the second period to even the score at 1-1. The Stouffville, Ontario native blasted a rebound from the edge of the circle into an open net, as BC goaltender Corinne Boyles was caught out of position after saving the initial shot by Alex Moore.
The Eagles had two quality scoring opportunities in the first period. The first came at 7:40 when freshman Kristyn Capizzano got behind the defenders for a breakaway, but was denied a short-handed goal by Mazzocchi. Taylor Wasylk had the second chance for BC, receiving a pass from Capizzano and lifting a wrister from the far circle that nearly snuck in the back of the net but was turned away by Mazzocchi.
The Saints had an opportunity to score in the second period moments before they actually lit the lamp, but Boyles made a kick save on a backhanded bid by Sydney Bell to momentarily preserve the 1-0 lead.
Boyles stopped 32 of 33 shots and improves to 3-0-0. Mazzocchi made 30 saves in 58:08 and falls to 0-4-0.
Notes: St. Lawrence's first goal marked the first time BC allowed a power play goal this season. The Eagles had prevented their opponents from scoring on the man advantage the previous 11 chances.
