PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team opened the 2013-14 season with a 5-3 exhibition win against McGill University on Sept. 28 at the newly renovated Schneider Arena.

Through the first twenty minutes of play, the Friars held a 1-0 lead against the Martlets. Senior Rebecca Morse (Westfield, N.J.) put Providence ahead at 15:08 of the period when she capitalized on the power play. Morse's unassisted goal came after she followed up on a play in front of the McGill net, eventually putting the puck past goaltender Andrea Weckman.

McGill evened the game at one with 4:59 left to play in the second period with a goal from Katia Clement after converting on a 2-on-1 play.

Providence responded at 16:26 when graduate student Janine Weber's (Innsbruck, Austria) goal regained the lead. The Martlets answered with a breakaway goal from Stefanie Pohlod to once again tie the game with 2:03 left in the frame.

Junior Brooke Simpson (Boxboro, Mass.) was awarded a penalty shot at 19:33 after being slashed during a breakaway. Simpson put a backhander behind Weckman to give the Friars a 3-2 lead heading into the final period.

A goal early into the third period from freshman Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) extended the Friars lead to 4-2. Carels goal at 2:27 would prove to be the difference in the game as the Martlets tightened the Friars lead with 6:16 left to play in the game when the team converted on the power play.

Providence would score one last time before the end of regulation when freshman Brittney Thunstrom (Coon Rapids, Minn.) made a nice play while driving to the net before putting the puck past Weckham.

The Friars kick-off their regular season on the road against Union College on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m. They conclude the series against Union on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 4:00 p.m.
