SCHENECTADY, N.Y.-The University of Maine women's ice hockey team fell to Union College 2-0 on Friday night. Union was 2-3 on the power play.
Both Maine and Union's defense played strong in the first period. The Black Bears had four shots on goal while Union had two shots in net in the first.
Union got on the board at 4:35 in the second period after Maine's Kristin Gilmour went in the box, Stefine Thompson scored on a pass from Maddy Norton to give Union the 1-0 edge on the Black Bears.
Maine went into the plenty box late in the second giving Union another power play opportunity and the Dutchwomen put one by Maine when Courtney Turner knocked the puck in the net on a pass from Elsa Bruestle at 18:21.
Maine and Union tied for shots on goal in the second both with 12.
Both teams had good opportunities in the third but remind scoreless. Maine had 5 shots on goal, while Union had 12. Maine looked for a goal late in the third after pulling goalie Meghann Treacy (Lake Peekskill, N.Y.) but came up short.
Treacy (Lake Peekskill, N.Y.) made 24 saves, while Union goalie Shenae Lundberg stopped 21.
Maine was 0 for 4 on the power play.
The Black Bears fall to a 1-13-5 on the season, while Union improves to 6-11-0 on the season.
Maine continues their series with Union College Saturday December 14th, the puck drops at 2pm.
