Black Bears go 3-for-5 on power-play to secure victory

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.-The University of Maine women's ice hockey team defeated Union College 6-3 on Saturday afternoon. The Black Bears were 3 for 4 on power play opportunities; scoring a season high of six goals.

The Black Bears came out strong after falling to Union 2-0 the night before on two power play goals.

Maine started off with a power play goal at 4:49 in the first when Eve Boissonneault (Sudbury, Ontario) scored her first goal of the season on a pass from Brianne Kilgour (Hamilton Ontario).

The Black Bears struck again with another power play goal when Kristin Gilmour(Millgrove, Ontario) put the puck in the net for her first goal of the season at 12:33 in the first.

Union answered, getting on the board late in the first when Stefanie Thomson scored on a power play goal with an assist from Maddy Nortan at 17:35.

Maine outshot Union 8 to 5 in the first period.

Maine entered the second period leading Union 2-1. The Black Bears continued their hot streak in the second. Emile Brigham (Anoka, Minn.) knocked the puck in the net on a pass from Hailey Browne (Oakville, Ontario) at 3:30 into the second.

The Black Bears increased their lead on another power play goal at 11:26 into the second when Shawna Lesperance (Belle River, Ontario) scored on a pass from Kelly McDonald (Ancaster, Ontario) to give Maine a 4-1 lead over the Dutchwomen.

Union took advantage of a power play late in the second when Stefanie Thomson struck again putting one by Maine goalie Maraih Fujimargari (Markham, Ontario) with just seconds to go in the second period.

Maine's team effort continued in the third when Abbey Cook (Fairpoint, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal at 10:24. Just minutes' later Union answered with another power play goal from Kathryn Tomasell making it a 5-3 game.

Lesperance sealed the win with an empty net goal in the final seconds of the game.

Maine outshot Union 36 to 21.

Fujimargari made 21 saves while Shenae Lundberg made 12 saves and Madeleine Dahl stopped 23.

Maine improves to a 2-13-5 on the season while Union drops to a 6-12-0.

Maine returns to the ice on January 11th as they take on Boston University at Alfond Arena.
