Chestnut Hill, Mass. - No. 3 Boston College defeated No. 5 Cornell Friday afternoon, 6-2, to improve to 4-0-1 on the season. With the Eagles' victory over the Big Red, BC records its first win against a top-ten opponent this year and remains undefeated.

The Eagles and the Big Red had plenty of scoring opportunities in the first frame, but neither team could capitalize. BC went on its first power play of the day four minutes into the game after a Cornell cross checking penalty. The Big Red came up with a short-handed chance, but freshman goaltender Katie Burt made a great save after a two-on-two situation

Junior forward Alex Carpenter threatened with a shot, blocked by Cornell defenseman Erin O'Connor, but the Big Red killed the Eagles' man advantage.

The Eagles went on their first penalty kill after freshman Megan Keller went to the box for checking in the sixth minute of play. Alex Carpenter had a short-handed breakaway saved by Cornell goaltender Paula Voorheis. Sophomore forward Andie Anastos added to the rush with two back-to-back shots, both saved by Voorheis. BC and Cornell entered the first intermission tied up at zero.

Forty seconds into the second period, senior defenseman Emily Pfalzer scored on a man advantage for the Eagles' fifth power play goal of the season to put Boston College up, 1-0.

With 11 minutes left in the second frame, the Big Red answered on a power play goal after a Dana Trivigno body checking penalty. Cassandra Pourier's shot fired from the blue line was misdirected by Brianne Jenner and tipped in to beat freshman goaltender Katie Burt in the upper left corner. Boston College is now 12-15 on penalty kills this season.

Cornell kept the pressure strong and broke away for a two-on-one with under five minutes remaining in the second. Emily Fulton netted Cornell's go-ahead goal in the upper right corner to put the Big Red ahead, 2-1.

Junior forward Haley Skarupa responded with the equalizer seconds later on a pass from freshman defenseman Kali Flanagan from behind the net.

After a behind-the-back pass from Kate Leary, Tori Sullivan passed it off to junior Dana Trivigno, who found the back of the net to regain the lead for her first goal of the season. The Eagles headed into the second intermission with a 3-2 lead.

Boston College came out fast in the final stanza, scoring two quick goals in the first two minutes and 20 seconds of play. Alex Carpenter rebounded a shot by Haley Skarupa to muscle in BC's fourth goal less than a minute into the period. After Carpenter's third period goal, she now leads the team with five goals on the season.

Junior defenseman Lexi Bender rushed the net and dished the puck to senior Kate Leary, who beat Voorheis on the right side for her first goal of the season to extend the Eagles' lead to 5-2.

Dana Trivigno scored her second goal of the game off of Kate Leary's rebound during a five-on-three after consecutive Big Red penalties with ten minutes remaining. Trivigno's goal brought a final of 6-2 in the Eagles' win column.

The Eagles and the Big Red are back on Kelley Rink tomorrow for the second game of the series at 2 p.m.
