PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Brown, 4-2, in a non-conference match-up at Schneider Arena on Saturday afternoon. With the score tied 2-2 in the third period, sophomore Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Mainitoba) tallied the game-winning goal at the 15:29 mark. Senior Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.) added an empty net goal (19:09) to bring the score to its final, 4-2. With the win, Providence now stands at 3-12-3 on the season while Brown moves to 4-7-0 on the year.

Brown scored in the first, in the opening period, to take a 1-0 advantage into the second. Maddie Woo scored at 10:30 with Samantha Swanstrom assisting on the goal.

Providence scored two goals in the second frame to take a 2-1 lead. Hanrahan started the scoring at 5:31 when she received a feed in front of the net from sophomore Kendra Goodrich (Apple Valley, Minn.). Sophomore Liv Halvorson (Richdield, Minn.) scored the second goal of the period on a slap shot. Senior Brooke Simpson (Boxborough, Mass.) and freshman Madison Sansone (Lockport, N.Y.) teamed up for the assists. Sansone's assist was her first collegiate point.

The Bears fought back to tie the game in the third period when Woo notched her second goal of the game, while shorthanded, at 11:48. The assist went to Sarah Robson.

It was at 15:29 in the third when Cassidy Carels scored the game-winning goal. Carels scored the goal after senior Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.) ripped a shot from the blue line. Carels was in front of the net to gather up the rebound and put the puck in for a 3-2 lead. Junior Lexi Romanchuk (San Jose, Calif.) also assisted on the play. To close out the contest, Hanrahan notched an empty net goal at 19:09. The play started with Halvorson forcing a turnover then dishing the puck off to Romanchuk who passed it up to Hanrahan.

Junior Allie Morse (Cottage Grove, Minn.) turned away 20 shots in the game while Julianne Landry stopped 24 attempts.

Each team tallied seven penalties in the contest. Providence held the advantage in shots, 28-22.

The Friars will next host New Hampshire in a single Hockey East contest on Friday, Dec. 5 at Schneider Arena. The puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.
