PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team recorded a 5-0 loss to the #8/9 Clarkson University Golden Knights on Saturday, Oct. 11 at Schneider Arena, in the team's home opener. With the defeat, the Friars fall to 0-3-0 overall while Clarkson improves to 2-1-0.

Following the first twenty minutes of play, the Friars trailed the Golden Knights 1-0. Cayley Mercer found the puck and skated into the Friars zone on a breakaway to give Clarkson the lead when she slid the puck behind Providence junior goaltender Allie Morse (Cottage Grove, Minn.). The goal, which was assisted by Daniella Matteucci, was scored at 9:42 of the first period.

Clarkson added two more goals during the second period, giving the team a 3-0 lead over the Friars. The first of the two goals in the period came at 2:17 while Clarkson was on the power play. Christine Lambert collected the puck behind the Providence net and connected a pass to Shannon MacAulay, who was playing the point on the power play. MacAulay fired a shot from the blue line that made its way through traffic and past Morse. Genevieve Bannon finished of the scoring at 12:16 of the period when her backhand shot found its way into the back of the Friars net to put the Golden Knights ahead 3-0. Savannah Harmon and Jennifer Shields each assisted on the goal.

In the third period, the Golden Knights secured the win over the Friars with two additional goals. Mercer's second goal of the game extended Clarkson's lead at 7:10 when her shot rang in off the crossbar past Morse, while on a 2-on-1 rush through the Providence zone. Corie Jacobson completed the game's scoring at 13:00 of the third period when she scored the fifth goal of the game for Clarkson.

Despite the loss, Morse finished the game with 28 saves for the Friars while Tiley stopped all 14 shots by Providence to earn the shutout for Clarkson. Providence was outshot 33-14 in the game.

The Friars and the Golden Knights will play the second half of the weekend series tomorrow Sunday, Oct. 12 at 3:00pm at Schneider Arena.
