PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team posted a 3-2 loss against the University of Vermont Catamounts in the team's final regular season game on Sunday, Feb. 22 at Schneider Arena. Providence finishes the regular season with a 6-23-4 overall record and a 5-15-1 mark in the Hockey East while Vermont moves to 15-17-2 on the season and 6-14-1 in league play.

The first period ended in a tie as Providence and Vermont each netted a goal in the opening twenty minutes of play. At 10:43, Amanda Pelkey gave the Catamounts a 1-0 lead when she capitalized on a shot off the rush that rang off the post and past Providence goaltender Allie Morse (Cottage Grove, Minn.). Dayna Colang assisted the game's first goal.

Providence evened the score when sophomore Lauren Klein (Shoreview, Minn.) scored her first goal as a Friar. The defenseman fired a shot from the blue line that found the back of the net, beating Vermont netminder Madison Litchfield at 10:55 of the first period. Sophomore Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) and senior Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.) recorded the assists on the goal to make the game 1-1.

Vermont held a 2-1 lead at the end of the second period. Victoria Andreakos scored the go-ahead goal for the Catamounts at 4:40 of the period after being set-up on the play by Casey Leveillee and Delia McNally, who earned the assists.

Bridget Baker was credited with the game-winning goal for Vermont at 8:35 of the third period. Baker fired a shot from the goal line that deflected off of Morse's pads into the Providence goal for a 3-2 lead. Sarah Campbell tallied the lone assist on the game-winning goal.

With Morse on the bench for an extra attacker, junior Brittney Thunstrom (Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored to bring the Friars within one goal. Senior Brooke Simpson (Boxborough, Mass.) started the play when she connected a pass from the boards to senior Allison Micheletti (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.). Micheletti fired a shot from the blue line that Thunstrom redirected past Litchfield at 17:33 of the third period.

At the conclusion of the game, a ceremony was held to honor the six graduating seniors on the team: Stephanie DeMars (Vermontville, N.Y.), Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.), Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.), Suzie Lundeen (Minneapolis, Minn.), Allison Micheletti (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and Brooke Simpson (Boxborough, Mass.).

The Friars finished the game outshooting the Catamounts, 43-28.

Morse made 25 saves in the game while Litchfield stopped 41 shots by the Friars.

Providence will travel to Kelley Rink in Chestnut Hill, Mass. to face-off against No. 1 seed Boston College in the Hockey East Quarterfinals. The best-of-three series opens on Friday, Feb. 27 with the second game set for Saturday, Feb. 28. If a third game is required, it will be played on Sunday, March 1. The start times of the games are set for 7:00 p.m.
