BURLINGTON, Vt. - Senior goaltender Ali Binnington made 27 saves and earned her second shutout of the season as RIT defeated Vermont 2-0 Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

The Tigers opened the scoring for the second straight afternoon with 3:58 left in the first period. Jess Paton hit Celeste Brown with a perfect pass and Brown broke in alone on Vermont goaltender Madison Litchfield. Brown fired a low wrist shot past Litchfield for her second goal of the season. Emilee Bulleid picked up the secondary assist on the play.

After outshooting the Tigers 10-4 in the first period the Catamounts were on their heels for much of the second period. Vermont had to kill off three RIT power play opportunities. Litchfield made nine saves in the second period, including five while shorthanded and once again the teams went to the third period with the Tigers leading 1-0.

Early in the third period RIT got a much-needed insurance goal off an offensive zone faceoff. Lindsay Grigg won the faceoff back to Taylor Thurston at the point. She fired a wrist shot that Kolbee McCrea redirected off the post and in to make it 2-0 just 3:16 into the period.

The Catamounts had two power play opportunities in the third period as they tried to comeback again. Late in the period Vermont pulled Litchfield and attacked Binnington for almost two minutes with a six-on-four advantage but they couldn't find the back of the net.

Litchfield made 23 saves for Vermont as the Catamounts fell to 3-2-1 this season. With the win Binnington improved to 3-2-0 on the year.

Vermont returns to action next weekend as they host Union College in a two-game set at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Friday night a 7 p.m. the Catamounts will be hosting their second annual "Pack the Gut Challenge" presented by the Windjammer.

The goal this season is to break last year's single game Hockey East attendance record of 2,028 fans and support the local Meals on Wheels organization. Admission is only $2, UVM students are free with a valid ID.

NOTES: Dayna Colang won 9 of the 12 faceoffs she took ... Victoria Andreakos led all Catamounts with six shots ... The Catamounts were six-for-six on the penalty kill on Sunday, they have successfully killed off their last 19 penalties ... The penalty kill is sixth in the NCAA, having only been scored once in 21 opportunities.
