Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Merrimack College women's ice hockey team fell to Robert Morris in the final game of their weekend series on Saturday afternoon, 4-2. The Warriors displayed a far better level of play compared to the previous night's game with the Colonials.

Head coach Erin Hamlen, "I certainly liked our compete level a lot better today. Robert Morris had a great work ethic in both games, and I think we came back harder with more conviction in this game. We made some adjustments on the penalty kill, and even though they scored two on the power play in the very last seconds I felt we were able to hold them off. Ridgewell played outstanding today and gave us the opportunity to win this game. I'm excited to get back on the ice for practice and really work on our fundamentals."
How It Happened
The Warriors came out in their second game of the weekend with a much higher level of intensity, trying to set the tone for the game early. But the Warriors would take an early penalty in the first that shifted the momentum towards Robert Morris. While Merrimack would kill off their first penalty of the game, the Colonials would score shortly after it expired to take a 1-0 lead.
That goal would not deter the Warriors, though, as they continued to apply pressure throughout the first. With under a minute to go in the opening period that pressure would pay off as freshman Madison Morey (Fairbanks, Alaska) would score her first goal on great backhand put-back off of a rebound to tie the game at one headed to the second.
The Warriors continued to battle entering the second, but penalties would continue to hurt them. The Colonials would score a power-play goal at 12:54 in the second to take a 2-1 lead. Under a minute later, Robert Morris would be awarded a penalty shot. Freshman Samantha Ridgewell (Outlook, Sasketchewan) would come out of her crease, forcing the Colonial shooter to take it outside where they would shoot it wide. The deficit would remain at one entering the third.
Robert Morris would score 1:36 into the final period to extend their lead to two, but the Warriors would continue to attack. Their intensity would draw them another penalty, however, on which the Colonials would capitalize to extend their lead to three.
With just over two minutes remaining in the game, freshman Emily Volpe (Whitby, Ontario) would crash the net and force the puck in for her first goal to cut the Colonials' lead to 4-2. That second goal would not be enough for Merrimack, though, as that is the score the game would finish with.
Inside The Numbers
- Through four games, the Warriors have scored nine goals, all of which have been scored by nine different players, a testament to the recruiting of this first-year team.
- Rdigewell would make 33 saves in the game in what was an impressive outing for the freshman goaltender
- Freshman Paige Voight (St. Michael, Minn.) picked up her fourth assist of the season to improve her team-high point total to five.
