STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's ice hockey team extended its winning streak to four games after defeating Maine 5-3 Friday at the Mark Edward Frietas Ice Forum. Freshman Briana Colangelo (Whitby, Ont.) notched two goals for the Huskies, including the game-winning goal.

The Huskies improve to 8-4-1 overall and 3-2 in Hockey East games while Maine drops to 3-11 overall and 2-8 in WHEA play.

FIRST PERIOD

UConn held a 2-0 lead after the first period. Sophomore Kayla Mee (Stonewall, Manitoba) gave the Huskies and early lead when she scored her second goal of the season less than five minutes into the game.

Colangelo extended UConn's lead just over five minutes later when she scored her first of the evening to put the Huskies on top 2-0 less than halfway into the period.

The Huskies outshot the Black Bears 11-7 in the first period.

SECOND PERIOD

UConn killed off a penalty that carried over into the second period. Sophomore Jaime Fox (Unionville, Ont.) scored her first goal of the season from the point 7:55 into the second period. Freshman Catherine Crawley (Washingtonville, N.Y.) took credit on the assist.

With less than five minutes to play in the middle period, Colangelo nabbed her second goal of the game to give UConn a commanding 4-0 lead in the back half of the second.

Maine got on the board late in the second with a goal from leading scorer Vendula Pribylova just 22 seconds left on the clock. Maine outshot UConn 13-4 in the middle frame, but UConn still held a 4-1 lead at the end of the second.

THIRD PERIOD

The Black Bears cut UConn's lead to two goals to start the thid period when Pribylova scored her second goal of the game 2:47 into the third, putting the score at 4-2 with UConn in the lead.

Halfway through the third, Crawley capitalized on the power play for UConn on a play set up by Fox and senior Jessica Stott (Winnipeg, Manitoba).

It was just a minute later that Maine answered with another goal, this one scored by Brooke Stacey, which left the score at 5-3 with less than 10 minutes to go in the final frame. The Black Bears finished with a 25-22 advantage on shots.

Junior goaltender Annie Belanger (Sherbrooke, Quebec) finished with 22 saves against the Black Bears, who went 1-5 on the power play. UConn was 1-4 on the man advantage.
