HAMDEN, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team battled back after being down 2-0 to No. 8/9 Quinnipiac Saturday in the Nutmeg Classic Consolation game, but ultimately fell short 3-2 in the end.
Two goals from junior Leah Lum (Richmond, B.C.) put the Huskies back in contention with the Bobcats 2-2, along with 42 saves from junior goaltender Annie Belanger (Sherbrooke, Quebec).
The Huskies finish fourth in the 2016 Nutmeg Classic after going 0-1-1 in the course of the tournament. UConn is now 8-5-3 as it heads back into league play. QU finishes third on the weekend and improves to 11-4-3.
FIRST PERIOD
After UConn opened on the attack with back-to-back shots, Quinnipiac took an early lead when Taryn Baumgardt snuck one past Belanger's blocker side 4:24 into the game.
The Bobcats extended their lead to 2-0 off a face-off 11:07 into the game. QU's Kenzie Lancaster dropped the puck back to Randi Marcon after winning the face-off and Marcon buried it top-shelf from the top of the circle.
Lum put UConn on the board with just 28 seconds remaining in the period to cut Quinnipiac's lead in half 2-1. Sophomore Jaime Fox (Unionville, Ont.) and freshman Briana Colangelo (Whitby, Ont.) each earned a helper on the play.
SECOND PERIOD
Lum picked up her second of the afternoon on the power play at the start of the second period. After a penalty was assessed to Quinnipiac for interference, Lum tapped in a rebound off a shot from sophomore Kayla Mee (Stonewall, Manitoba) less than 30 seconds into the man-advantage to tie it 2-2. That marked Lum's fourth power play goal of the season.
Junior Justine Fredette (Winnipeg, Manitoba) also picked up an assist on Lum's second goal. She has tallied a point in the last three consecutive contests and now has six total points this season.
Less than 30 seconds after Lum's power play goal, sophomore Rebecca Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) was called for hooking, but UConn killed off the penalty and preserved the 2-2 tie.
Freshman Catherine Crawley (Washingtonville, N.Y.) almost gave UConn its first lead of the game in the back end of the period when she rang a shot of the post, but the score remained 2-2 going into the second break.
THIRD PERIOD
Quinnipiac's Melissa Samoskevich broke the tie 18 seconds into the third period with a wide wrap-around goal that gave the Bobcats a 3-2 lead.
The Bobcats dominated the offense in the start of the third, outshooting the Huskies 13-1 in the seven minutes after QU's third goal and 45-18 overall.
UConn came alive at the end when Lum, Fox and freshman Erica D'Errico (Concord, N.H.) gave some quality chances, but the clock ran out with Quinnipiac on top 3-2.
