SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - An early third period goal from sophomore Kayla Mee (Stonewall, Manitoba) tipped the scale in favor of the UConn women's ice hockey team, who swept Union 2-1 Saturday at Messa Rink.
UConn killed off three penalties unscathed in the first period, but Union scored a last minute, even-strength goal with 59 seconds on the clock to claim a 1-0 lead going into the first break.
Similarly to the first, the majority of the second period remained scoreless until the final minutes of the frame when junior captain Justine Fredette (Winnipeg, Manitoba) tied it up 1-1 with less than two minutes before the second intermission.
Fredette tucked it in the back door of Union's goal with help from freshman Leona Sim (Vancouver, B.C.) and junior Theresa Knutson (Onalaska, Wis.). Knutson had the original shot on net that was saved by the Dutchwomen's net minder, but Fredette managed to find the back of the net with the rebound.
Union was called for hooking 30 seconds into the third period, giving UConn just its second power play opportunity of the game. Mee capitalized for the Huskies on the man-advantage to put UConn on top 2-1 less than two minutes into the third period.
Senior Kelly Harris (Canton, Mich.) earned the assist after she fed the puck off to Mee, who notched her first career game-winner from the top of the zone.
Junior goaltender Annie Belanger (Sherbrooke, Quebec) finished with 23 saves and helped UConn successfully kill off seven penalties.
