HAMDEN, Connecticut - The Black Bears' Women's Ice Hockey team almost came all the way back from five-goal deficit but in the end finished just one goal short as they lost to Quinnipiac University, 5-4, on Friday evening, their record falling to 1-2-0 on the season.

Quinnipiac scored early and often in the first period, with 2 goals in the first three minutes. 1:50 into the first, Randi Marcon snuck one past Mariah Fujimagari off the feed from Raquel Pennoyer and Emma Greco, and less than 60 seconds later, Taylor Cianfarano shot one top shelf after a getting a pass from Melissa Samoskevich to put QU up 2-0 quickly. Samoskevich wasn't done yet, as she would score 11:35 into the first, from Meghan Turner and Taylor Cianfarano, extending the lead to 3. Just 3 minutes later Quinnipiac got a power play chance and Emma Woods took advantage and put one past Carly Jackson, who came into the game in releif of Fujimagary after the third goal. After 1 period Quinnipiac led 4-0.

In the second Quinnipiac would extend their lead on another power play goal, it was Taylor Cianfarano 3:40 into the period getting her second goal of the evening, putting QU up 5-0.

Carly Jackson would not let up a goal after that one, though, as she went on to save 7 shots in the 2nd, allowing the Maine offense to get back into it. Maine answered back with a power play goal 14:51 into the 2nd period from Catherine Tufts, who saw an errant puck ricochet off a QU defender, and came to her stick with a wide open net in front of her. The 2nd period would end with a score of 5-1.

In the third, Jackson would save all 12 shots faced, and her teammates capitalized scoring 3 straight goals in the period. Freshman Forward Tereza Vanisova scored her second goal of the season 3:53 into the 3rd period from Vendula Pribylova (with her 3rd assist of the season) to cut the lead to 3 goals.

Senior Forward Morgan Sakundiak got her first two goals of the season within 2 minutes of each other, her first coming 7:06 into the third period, making it a 2 goal game, and 9:02 into the third on a power play with an assist to Emilie Brigham. That's where the Black Bears' rally would end, with the final score of 5-4.

Mariah Fujimagari takes the loss as her record falls to 1-1-0 on the season; Quinnipiac's Senior Goaltender Sydney Rossman saved 15 of 19 shots faced in the victory, she and Quinnipiac have a 1-0-0 record on the season.

The two teams will go at it once again Saturday afternoon, October 1st, at 3pm.
