ORONO, Maine - Despite being the first on the board, the Black Bears Women's Hockey team dropped their home and season opener to Rensselaer Polytech. 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The game remained scoreless after 1 period where both goalies saw work as the two teams combined for a total of 16 shots on goal, 9 for RPI and 7 for Maine. The second period opened with a quick goal from Freshman Kara Washer 17 seconds into the period, giving Maine a 1-0 lead on her first career goal.

The lead would only last for less than 30 seconds as RPI marched right back and answered as Laura Horwood scored 40 seconds into the second period, assisted by Blake Orosz. RPI would add another goal later in the period by Makenna Thomas, assisted by Ana Orzechowski 7:45 into the 2nd period. RPI would hold their 2-1 lead until the end of the 2nd period.

In the third period Maine found themselves defending a 5-on-3 penalty mid-way through the third period, when Hannah Behounek, assisted by Laura Horwood and Josefine Hansen, found her way around the 3 Maine defenders and buried it in the back of the net. The score would remain 3-1 until the end of the period.

RPI Goaltender Lovisa Selander stopped 25 of 26 shots faced and gets the first win of the season. Across the ice, Freshman Goaltender Carly Jackson saw 26 saves on 29 shots on goal, getting her first career decision in the loss.

The two teams go back at it on Sunday the 25th at 2pm at Alfond Arena.
