PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated the Vermont Catamounts, 5-4, on Feb. 24 at Schneider Arena. Kate Friesen (Altona, Manitoba) and Christina Putigna (Grimsby, Ontario) led the Friars with three points on two assists and one goal each and Cassidy MacPherson (Oakville, Ontario) scored a short-handed goal and the game-winning goal. The Friars take a 1-0 lead in the Quarterfinal series and improve to 17-15-3 overall, while the Catamounts move to 13-13-9 overall.
Madison Myers (Colchester, Vt.) and Vermont's Madison Litchfield held both teams scoreless in the first period. Myers made four saves while Litchfield made five.
Vermont opened the scoring at 8:09 of the second period from Cassidy Campeau.
The Friars responded with a power play goal at the 14:40 minute mark of the second period. Putigna sent a feed to Rachel Rockwell (Broadview Heights, Ohio) on the point, whose shot went just wide of the net, bounced off the end wall and to Friesen on the back door. Friesen took a one-timer to beat Litchfield and even the score, 1-1.
The Friars took the lead less than three minutes into the third period, when Putigna added her second point of the day on the go-ahead goal. Brooke Boquist (Thunder Bay, Ontario) moved the puck to Friesen on the point, and then across the zone to Putigna. The sophomore forward's shot went to the upper corner of the net.
Providence's MacPherson extended the lead less than two minutes later on a shorthanded tally. After a defensive zone faceoff, Friesen rang the puck around the back boards and to Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) along the half wall, who chipped the puck to herself in the neutral zone and sent a lateral pass to MacPherson after crossing into Catamount territory. MacPherson skated in to finish the job and give the Friars a 3-1 advantage.
Vermont scored three quick goals at 7:40 from Daria O'Neill, at 11:33 from Eve-Audrey Picard, and at 13:24 from Alyssa Gorecki, taking back the lead, 4-3.
The Friars rallied for two more goals. Rockwell pushed the puck to Putigna on the half wall in the Friars' defensive end, who set a saucer stretch pass to Meaghan Rickard (Coventry, R.I.) on the far blue line. Rickard skated in on Litchfield alone and backhanded home the equalizer, 4-4.
Providence scored a second power play goal with eight seconds remaining in regulation to take the lead in the series, 1-0. Rickard moved the puck to Madison Sansone (Lockport, N.Y.) at the center point, and then to MacPherson on the left faceoff dot. The sophomore forward waited for the perfect screen and shot to the far post for a 5-4 Friar lead.
The Friars held off the Catamounts for the remaining eight seconds and took the first game of the series.
The teams will battle again on Feb. 25 at 2:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena for the second game of the best-of-three series.
