CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The third-ranked and top-seeded Boston College women's hockey team used three-point days from Makenna Newkirk and Toni Ann Miano to punch its ticket to its eighth-straight Hockey East Tournament semifinal appearance behind its 6-1 win over eighth-seeded Vermont on Saturday afternoon at Kelley Rink.

After staking a one-goal lead after the first period via Erin Connolly's tally, Vermont (10-20-5) evened the scoring through Kristina Shanahan's goal at 8:04 of the second.

However, Boston College (30-3-3) scored three times in two minutes and 30 seconds - from Miano (power play), Kenzie Kent and Newkirk (power-play) - between 13:27 and 15:57 to stake a 4-1 lead after two periods. Grace Bizal and Newkirk added power-play tallies on a UVM five-minute major in the third period to push the final score to 6-1.

With three points today, Miano pushed her career point total to 101 and became the third defenseman in program history to reach the 100-point mark, joining BC All-Americans and U.S. Olympic gold medalists Emily Pfalzer '15 (102 points) and Megan Keller '19 (115 points) in the blue line century club.

Katie Burt made 25 saves in the win, which was her 30th of the season. Vermont's Sydney Scobee stopped 42-of-48 shots for the Catamounts.

BC netted four power-play goals, tying the school's record for man-advantage goals in a game.

Boston College will see its next action in the Hockey East Tournament semifinal round. The Eagles will face the lowest remaining seed in the tournament at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 3. That opponent will either be fourth-seeded - and host - Northeastern, who swept fifth-seeded New Hampshire on Saturday, or sixth-seeded Boston University, who will face Maine in the decisive third game of their series on Sunday in Orono. Hockey East's championship weekend is being played at NU's Matthews Arena. Tickets are available at gonu.com.

2018 HOCKEY EAST QUARTERFINALS | Game 2
No. 3 Boston College 6, Vermont 1
Saturday, February 24, 2018
Chestnut Hill, Mass. | Kelley Rink at Conte Forum

HOW IT HAPPENED

1st, 12:32 | BC GOAL, 1-0 - Delaney Belinskas broke up a Vermont pass to the point in the BC and skated the puck out, picking up Erin Connolly and pinging her with a pass at the red line to create a 2-on-1. Connolly unleashed a shot from the edge of the faceoff circle, but it was high and wide. The rebound caromed off the boards right to Belinskas coming around the back of the net, and she picked out Ryan Little in the high slot for a one-timer. UVM goalie Sydney Scobee made the initial save, but the rebound fell right in front of Connolly, who's first shot was short but she got a backhand on the second effort and pushed it past Scobee's extended arm for the first goal of the game.

2nd, 8:04 | UVM GOAL, 1-1 - Off a neutral-zone faceoff, UVM won the draw and Daria O'Neill played the puck up off the boards in front of the BC bench. Ali O'Leary skated on to it and brought it into the Eagles' end, dropping it off to Kristina Shanahan on the front edge of the top of the circle. Shanahan controlled and got off a rising wrist shot as she fell down, finding space over BC goalie Katie Burt's shoulder to tie the game.

2nd, 13:27 | BC GOAL, 2-1 (PPG) - Caitrin Lonergan carried the puck into the zone and behind the net, pushing a centering pass up to Grace Bizal near the inside edge of the faceoff circle. Bizal laid it off for Toni Ann Miano along the boards, and Miano skated out to the blue line and came across centrally before taking space down in the high slot. She ripped a shot into traffic from just above the hashmarks, placing it just over Scobee's glove in the upper right corner.

2nd, 14:46 | BC GOAL, 3-1 - Miano intercepted a UVM clearing pass behind the blue line and dumped it in, where it clipped off the outreached arm of a Catamounts defender. Newkirk won the race to the puck and flicked a backwards pass to Kent coming in behind her on the right side of the goal. Kent took the puck and stickhandled back to her forehand, where she found a sliver of space between Scobee and the post to put BC ahead by a pair.

2nd, 15:57 | BC GOAL, 4-1 (4v3 PPG) - With BC skating with a 4-on-3 advantage, Newkirk was kicked out of the faceoff circle, where Daryl Watts replaced her. Watts won the draw right forward and Newkirk skated onto the puck, putting a quick wrist shot over Scobee's glove hand for the team's second power-play goal of the game.

3rd, 9:00 | BC GOAL, 5-1 (PPG) - With the Eagles gaining a five-minute power-play after UVM's Taylor Flaterty checked Belinskas from behind into the boards and was also given a game misconduct penalty, BC lined up on the ensuing faceoff. Lonergan won the draw and Miano got the puck at the point. She threaded a pass down low to Lonergan, who was just off the goal line. Lonergan looked up and found Bizal in the high slot, and the defenseman put a high wrist shot on target that beat Scobee high over her blocker for BC's third power-play goal of the game.

3rd, 13:38 | BC GOAL, 6-1 (PPG) - Still on the extended five-minute power play, Newkirk won the offensive-end draw and Maegan Beres poked the puck back to Kent coming across the circle. The puck clipped off Kent's stick and back to Beres off to her left, and the freshman got enough on her pass to find Newkirk cutting in off the halfboards. Alone in front, Newkirk deked and cut across the goal after Scobee committed, pocketing her second power-play goal of the game by sliding it past the prone goaltender to wrap up the scoring.
