ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's hockey team found itself staring down a three-goal deficit with less than 15 minutes to play in the third period of the third game of a best-of-three quarterfinal series with the Boston University Terriers. And then Brooke Stacey picked the perfect time to net her first career hat trick, netting three goals in the span of seven minutes to send the game to overtime where she assisted on Tereza Vanisova's game-winning goal. With the win, Maine advances to the Women's Hockey East Semifinals.
The Black Bears dominated the opening 10 minutes, outshooting the Terriers, 7-1, in the first 10 minutes of play only to be met by the strong play of Erin O'Neil.
BU's second shot on goal of the day though would be a goal, as Rebecca Leslie capitalized on a power-play goal. The Terriers would build up a 2-0 lead by the first break, as six minutes after assisting Leslie on her tally, Victoria Bach potted a woman-advantage goal of her won.
Neither team ripped the twine in the middle frame and the Black Bears entered the second intermission down by two but that deficit soon grew to three. After an errant pass in the neutral zone, Natasza Tarnowski scooped up the puck on the right wing and walked in on Carly Jackson to roof it glove side.
Maine kept pushing for a goal but nothing would go through. With 12 minutes to play, the Terriers were called for slashing and Stacey got to work.
First, the senior crashed the net and stayed on a loose puck, reaching around O'Neil at the far post to poke it through with 11:28 to play.
Three minutes and two seconds later, Vanisova started a rush up the right wing and into the BU zone. She fed Michelle Weis at the top of the circle and Weis backhanded a pass across the crease where Stacey slammed it home at the left post.
Stacey scored her third goal - and completed the natural hat trick - exactly seven minutes after she had started Maine's comeback with an unassisted goal.
With the Terriers attempting to break out of their own zone, Stacey picked off the puck in the high slot, turned to her forehand and wristed the puck into the top left corner of the net. The water bottle popped and the game was tied, 3-3.
In the midst of Stacey's scoring barrage, Jackson came up with a big left pad stop on a BU break down the right wing and the remaining 4:28 went without a goal so the teams headed to the 20-minute overtime period.
Though Bach would create the first opportunity of the extra time with a drive down the left wing that earned a power-play for the Terriers, Maine withstood it all. Just under five minutes into overtime, Alyson Matteau sent Stacey up the right wing with the puck. When she got to the right dot, Stacey looked to find Vanisova entering the slot for a one-timer past O'Neil's glove.
With the win, Maine (19-13-5, 11-9-4 WHEA) earned its first ever postseason series victory. Jackson finished with 22 save while O'Neil had 36. BU ends its season with an overall record of 14-17-6 overall and 8-12-5 in conference play. Maine had the final edge in shots on goal, 40-25.
