HANOVER, N.H. - Offense had been an issue for the UConn women's ice hockey team entering Sunday's game at Dartmouth, but the second half of the season is off to a strong start following a 5-2 win at the Thompson Arena.
In the Huskies' (5-7-7) first-ever game on New Year's Eve, four different players found the back of the net - leading the team to its first victory since Nov. 3 against Rensselaer. The win snaps a two-game losing skid.
Senior Theresa Knutson recorded her first multi-goal game of the season to lead the way, ending up as one of eight UConn players to tally a point on Sunday. Freshman Natalie Snodgrass (one goal, one assist) and junior Jaime Fox (two assists) each added multiple points of their own.
Even after seeing a 3-0 lead turn into a 3-2 game, UConn responded by scoring before the end of the second period to retake a two-goal lead. In the ensuing third period, the Huskies dominated.
Shots were tied at 19 heading into the final period, but the Huskies turned up the offensive pressure by firing 18 shots in the third - while Dartmouth mustered only five on goal. Senior goalie Annie Belanger made 22 saves in the win.
Knutson, who ended up with a team-high six shots, scored her second goal of the game on a power play at 12:33 in the third period, off passes from Fox and sophomore Catherine Crawley.
Knutson added to a 2-0 edge at 8:22 in the second period, scoring on a breakaway opportunity off a pass from sophomore defender Tristyn Svetek. It was her fifth goal of the season, extending the lead to 3-0.
Following the goal, both Snodgrass and junior Nora Maclaine were whistled for penalties - giving Dartmouth a 5-on-3 scenario. The Big Green capitalized with a goal from Tess Bracken at 10:06, cutting the lead to 3-1.
Dartmouth narrowed UConn's advantage to 3-2 at 11:57, but junior Kayla Mee gave the Huskies a cushion before the end of the period with her first goal of the season - a strike from the blue line - at 17:48.
UConn took an early 2-0 lead on Sunday, after goals from Snodgrass and Fredette in the first seven minutes of regulation. For Snodgrass, it was her team-leading 11th tally of the season.
Belanger made six saves in the first period, including one on a scrum in front of the net that pushed her back inside the goal. It was her 23rd career victory as a UConn goalie.
Four different players committed penalties throughout the game for UConn, but the Huskies killed off four of five Dartmouth power plays - maintaining their lead throughout the contest.
UConn returns to Hockey East action on Friday night at Merrimack, with puck drop at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Huskies are back at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum for a 3 p.m. game against Brown.
