TROY, N.Y. - Cailey Hutchison helped the University of Maine Black Bears grab a 2-1 win over the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Engineers on Friday evening, scoring the tie-breaking goal 5:49 into the third period.

Brooke Stacey stole the first goal of the game with a little help from the Engineers who helped push the puck the extra inch over the line into the net. Jessica Jacques started with the puck behind the net, passing to Stacey who took a shot then followed up on her own rebound after a save by RPI goaltender Lovisa Selander. Brittany Kucera got a piece of the puck amidst the bustle in front of the goal to grab an assist along with Jacques. With this goal, both Stacey and Jacques recorded their first points so far this season with this goal occurring just 3:34 into the first period to help give the Black Bears (2-1-0) an early 1-0 lead over the Engineers (0-3-0).

Maine's defense stood strong in the second period, backed by Carly Jackson in net, the Black Bears held the Engineers scoreless after giving them two back-to-back power plays within seconds of each other. Jackson successfully turned away six shots so far during RPI power plays, to hold onto the 1-0 lead going into the third period.

Just 26 seconds into the third period, RPI's Blake Orosz cleared the puck across the ice where teammate Megan Hayes tracked it down, then sent it back to Madeleine Burnett patiently waiting on the blue line. Burnett sent the puck flying from the point knocking it off the post into the net to tie up the game 1-1, registering her first collegiate goal.

The Black Bears answered back with 14:11 remaining in the third period, as Cailey Hutchison broke away across the ice weaving through RPI's defenders as she made a beeline for the net. After her first shot was stopped by Selander, she followed up her own rebound to put away the puck helping Maine pick up the 2-1 victory. Tereza Vanisova and Brittany Colton grabbed assists on the final goal of the game.

Maine outshot RPI, 36-22, but Engineer goalie Selander stopped 34 shots throughout the match. For the Black Bears, Jackson tallied 21 saves.

The Maine women's ice hockey team will rest up tonight for another match on RPI's home ice at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow.
