Freshman forward Claire Tyo and junior forward Caroline Peterson each had a goal and an assist for the Friars

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's hockey team defeated Merrimack College, 4-2, on Jan. 17 to finish the weekend sweep. The Friars ended both intermissions in a tie, but netted two in the final period for the win. Providence improves to 9-2-1 (9-2-1 HE) and Merrimack moves to 1-7-0 (1-7-0 HE).

GAME FLOW & NOTES

The Friars wasted no time getting on the board, as Isabelle Hardy (Oakville, Ontario) scored on the breakaway only 51 seconds into the match. Hardy was assisted by Chloe Gonsalves (Toronto, Ontario) and Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine) on the play.

Merrimack matched Providence's score at the end of the first period with a goal on the power play from Allison Reeb. Reeb was assisted by Dominika Laskova. The teams went into the first intermission tied 1-1.

The Warriors pulled ahead in the second period (5:27) with a goal by Dominika Laskova, her second point of the night, 2-1.

Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) followed up Merrimack's goal just two minutes later, equalizing the score for Providence on the power play. Peterson was assisted by Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) on her fourth goal of the season. The Friars entered the second intermission tied 2-2.

Claire Tyo (Massena, N.Y.) scored the game winner 9:16 into the final frame. Caroline Peterson dished the puck to Tyo who sniped a slap shot from the point, putting the Friars up 3-2.

Bailey Burton (Bloomington, Minn.) added insurance for the Friars in the final minute of the game on an empty netter, finishing out at 4-2.

Providence out-shot Merrimack in all three periods of the contest, and 35-11 overall.

This is the Friars third weekend series sweep of the season.
