TROY, N.Y. - Thanks to three goals from freshmen and junior Danny O'Regan's team-leading 12th tally of the year, the No. 2 Boston University men's ice hockey team posted a 5-1 victory over Rensselaer on Saturday evening at Houston Field House.

Senior Evan Rodrigues had three assists for the Terriers, who improve to 11-3-2 on the year. The win allowed the Terriers to enter the semester break with more than 10 wins for just the sixth team in program history.

Freshman defensemen John MacLeod and Brandon Hickey each found the back of the net and classmate J.J. Piccinich registered his first goal as a Terrier. Freshman Jack Eichel and senior Cason Hohmann both earned a pair of assists while sophomore Nick Roberto potted a late empty-netter.

Junior Matt O'Connor stopped the first 35 shots he faced, including an incredible save with the boot of his right pad while sprawled in the crease during the opening period, before allowing a late tally on RPI's last shot of the night.

After a scoreless first period, MacLeod opened the scoring when his shot from the right point tipped off a defender and trickled past RPI goaltender Scott Diebold at the 11:57 mark.

O'Regan doubled the lead on BU's second power-play chance of the evening. Eichel took a pass from Rodrigues at the left point and spotted O'Regan at the right crease. The freshman threading a perfect pass to O'Regan, who tipped it past Diebold just under three minutes after the first tally.

With time running out in the second, Eichel won a faceoff and got the the puck to Hickey, who eldued a defender above the left circle and skated to the near corner before flinging a backhand to the net. The puck went off Diebold and in with just six seconds left on the clock.

The Terriers made it a 4-1 affair midway through the third when Piccinich received a pass from Rodrigues and spun around in the slot before finding the net for his first collegiate tally.

The Engineers spoiled O'Connor's shutout bid with 2:55 left in regulation on a tally by junior Milos Bubela.

With Diebold pulled in favor of an extra attacker, Roberto closed out the scoring with 47 seconds left in regulation on assists from freshman A.J. Greer and junior Matt Lane.

The Terriers, who held a 37-36 shot advantage, committed just one penalty on the night and converted on one of their three power-play chances.

BU will return to action on Friday (Dec. 19) when it returns to Walter Brown Arena for the first time in 10 years to host the U.S. National Junior Team at Walter Brown Arena. The exhibition contest will start at 7:30 p.m.
