EAST LANSING, Mich. - Freshman Patrick Lee's power-play goal with 9.9 seconds remaining in regulation lifted the UMass hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Michigan State on Saturday night at Munn Ice Arena. The win moves the Minutemen to 1-2-0 on the year, while the Spartans fall to 1-1-0.

In addition to Lee's game winner, the rookie also collected a pair of assists for a three-point night, his first three points of his collegiate career. Sophomore Steven Iacobellis had a career-best performance with a four-point effort on two goals and two assists, while classmate Ray Pigozzi dished three helpers to bring the line's total to 10 points on the evening. Freshman Jake Horton collected his second goal of the season and his classmate and former junior teammate Henry Dill earned the victory in net in his first collegiate start.

Iacobellis put UMass up, 1-0, 15:10 into the opening period, crashing the net to complete a play started by Pigozzi and Lee.

Just one minute, 20 seconds later, though, Michigan State tied the score at 1-1. Matt Berry drove a shot past Dill from the top of the faceoff circle after Michael Ferrantino won the puck in the neutral zone.

Horton completed the scoring flurry less than a minute later, knocking the puck in from close range off a feed from Iacobellis on the wing at the 17:27 mark. Pigozzi earned an assist on the play, as well.

Berry later tied the score for the Spartans with a puck that took an odd bounce past Dill on a dump into the UMass zone, 8:44 into the second period.

Michigan State then pulled in front, 3-2, 52 ticks into the third period. Ferrantino rung a shot off the underside of the crossbar and in after receiving the puck from Mackenzie MacEachern and Berry.

Iacobellis came up with the equalizer for UMass at the 15:28 mark, cleaning up a rebound on a shot from the point by senior Oleg Yevenko with Lee also collecting a helper.

With 3:49 remaining in regulation, the Minutemen headed to the power play after Justin Hoomaian was whistled for contact to the head, resulting in a five-minute major and a game misconduct. Pigozzi took a pass from Iacobellis in around behind the net and found Lee in front for the one-timer at 19:50.

UMass narrowly trailed Michigan State in shots, 31-28, and won 38-of-75 faceoffs (50.7%). The Minutemen were 1-for-5 on the power play, while holding the Spartans to a 0-for-4 night with the man advantage. Dill turned aside 28 shots in his first collegiate start and Jake Hildebrand made 24 saves for the Spartans.

UMass will be back in action next Friday, Oct. 24, when the squad will head to Boston to face Northeastern in a Hockey East matchup at 7 p.m.
