NEW HAVEN, Ct. - Freshman Rob Darrar tallied his first career goal for ninth-ranked Vermont, but Yale topped the Catamounts by a score of 3-1 in non-conference action on Saturday night at Ingalls Rink. Yale improves to 8-3-2 (4-3-1 ECAC) on the season, while the Catamounts drop to 14-5-1 (7-3-1 HEA).

Vermont jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just under three minutes into the contest. Senior Kyle Reynolds worked his way around the net and dished a pass in front to Darrar. Darrar one-timed it just under Alex Lyons' blocker for the first score of his career, as the Catamounts took the 1-0 advantage.

With just under five minutes to play in the opening frame, Ryan Hitchcock evened the score at 1-1. Brody Hoffman made a pad save on Mitch Witek's long shot, but Hitchcock was able to corral the rebound and find the back of the net on a backhander.

Just over two minutes later, Trent Ruffolo gave Yale its first lead of the contest on his third goal of the season. Stu Wilson and Frank DiChiara picked up assists on the play, and the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead into the second period.

Midway through the second stanza, Yale worked the puck deep into the Vermont zone and Mike Doherty was able to pick up a loose puck in front of goal. Doherty fired a shot just under the crossbar to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead. Matthew Beattie and Hitchcock registered assists on the tally.

Following a scoreless 18-plus minutes to open the final frame, the Catamounts pulled the goalie with 1:43 remaining. Vermont wasn't able to find the back of the net with the man-advantage, eventually falling by a final of 3-1.

Hoffman and Mike Santaguida, who entered the game midway through the second period, combined to make 24 saves on the night. Lyon stopped 20 shots in net for Yale to earn his seventh victory of the season.

Vermont returns to action next Sunday (Jan. 11) for a road contest at Dartmouth with faceoff scheduled for 4 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
