AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team defeated the #6 UMass Minutemen in a shootout on Friday afternoon in the Mullins Center.

First Goal (1-0 Maine): 00:50 into the first period, Emil Westerlund and the Black Bears snagged a very early one goal lead. Simon Butala started the Maine attack. The defenseman played the puck ahead to Lynden Breen. Breen found a wide open Westerlund. Alone in the far circle, the senior buried the puck early in the Hockey East contest.

Second Goal (1-1): Carson Gicewicz evened the afternoon battle at one goal apiece less than two minutes later. Jake Gaudet did the majority of the work for UMass. The forward cleared space for Gicewicz. 3:08 into the match-up, each team had a goal.

Third Goal (2-1 #6 UMass): As a penalty was called on the Black Bears, Ty Farmer scored the second Minutemen goal of the first period. Confusion set in as the referee raised his hand, signaling a penalty. The Maine net was left open, which gave Farmer an easy target for the opposing tally.

Fourth Goal (3-1 #6 UMass): Mac Del Gaizo tallied his squad's third goal of the first 12:31. Finding a hole between Ostman's legs, Del Gaizo extended UMass's lead to 3-1.

Fifth Goal (3-2 #6 UMass): With the power play expiring, Adrien Bisson pulled the Black Bears to within one goal. Veli-Matti Tiuraniemi had his shot saved. The sophomore defenseman collected the rebound and stuffed the puck home.

Sixth Goal (3-3): Eduards Tralmaks tied the Hockey East contest with just under four minutes remaining in regulation. The senior forward fired a puck from the blue line. With traffic in front of the UMass net, Tralmaks' shot found its way into the back of the net. The two teams would play a scoreless overtime period.

Lynden Breen and Donavan Villeneuve-Houle both scored for the Black Bears during the shoot-out. Houle's goal eventually became the game winning tally, as Maine would knock-off the #6 UMass Minutemen in Amherst.
