Freshman forward Gaby Roy opened her career with four goals for the Eagles

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team was outshot 35-19 and fell 6-2 to Boston College in Friday afternoon's season opener at the Whittemore Center.

UNH pulled within 3-2 at 9:40 of the third period, but the Eagles answered 39 seconds to reestablish a two-goal advantage and then netted empty-net goals at 17:15 and 18:53 to secure the win.UNH goalie Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) stopped 11 shots in both the first and third periods in a 29-save effort. BC counterpart Maddy MacArthur was credited with 17 saves and Gaby Roy scored four goals.

The Wildcats and Eagles face off again Nov. 21, this time at BC's Conte Forum. Game time is 4:30 p.m. on NESN.


FIRST PERIOD SUMMARY

- Boston College generated an 11-2 shot advantage in the scoreless first period.


SECOND PERIOD SUMMARY

- The teams combined to score four goals in a span of 4 minutes, 21 seconds late in the second stanza as BC took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.

- Roy netted her first of four goals when her wrister from the slot ricocheted off the upper-right corner of the cage into the net. Her tally came with two seconds left on an Eagles' power play at 13;24

- UNH leveled the score, 1-1, at 15:38. Brianna Brooks (Whitby, Ontario) carried the puck into the attack zone and slipped a pass to the right wing for Nicole Kelly (Brantford, Ontario). Kelly sent a return pass to Brooks down the slot and she fired the puck past MacArthur. Kyla Bent (Halifax, Nova Scotia) was also credited with an assist.

-Willow Corson and Roy netted goals 71 seconds apart at 16:34 and 17:45 to give BC a 3-1 lead.


THIRD PERIOD SUMMARY

- Lauren Martin (Cambridge, Ontario) led a quick counterattack down the left wing and slipped a centering pass to Jada Christian (Caledon East, Ontario), who redirected the puck into the net to lift the 'Cats within 3-2 at 9:40. Talli Warren (Mundleville, New Brunswick) set up the tally with a pass through the netural zone to Martin.

- Roy completed her hat trick just 39 seconds later, however, when Kelly Browne found her alone at the left doorstep.

- UNH pulled Boutilier in favor on an extra attacker with 2:55 remaining and Jillian Fey scored into the empty net 10 seconds later to extend BC's lead to 5-2.

- Boutilier went to the bench again with 1:32 to play and Roy deposited the puck into the net with 67 seconds left to close the scoring.


UNH NOTEBOOK

- Three freshmen combined to produce UNH's first goal. It marked the first career goal and point for Brooks, as well as the first assist and point for both Kelly and Bent.

- Brooks also won 12 of 17 faceoffs to lead the Wildcats.

- Kelly recorded a team-high four shots. Brooks was next with three.

- Christian, UNH's top returning goal scored from last season, netted her 10th career goal.

- Annie Berry (Milton, Mass.) led the team with two blocked shots.

- All six points were recorded by Canadians - four from Ontario.


SERIES NOTEBOOK

- UNH now has a 43-25-6 lifetime record, including 21-11-4 at home, against Boston College.

- The Wildcats won each of the last two matchups of the 2019-20 season, including the regular-season finale (5-2) at the Whitt, to win the season series (2-1-0).
