Brandon Yip had a goal and three assists for the Terriers

LOWELL, Mass. (Feb. 8, 2008) - Brandon Yip (Maple Ridge, B.C.) had a goal and three assists as Boston University defeated No. 17 UMass Lowell, 6-2, Friday night at Hockey East action at the Tsongas Arena.

The Terriers improve to 9-14-4 overall and 7-8-3 in league play with the win. The River Hawks fall to 12-10-4 overall and 7-8-4 against Hockey East with the loss.

BU scored never trailed in the game, scoring two in the first, three in the second and one in the third. In addition to Yip, Colin Wilson (Winnipeg, Man.) and John McCarthy (Andover, Mass.) had multiple point nights for the Terriers.

Kevin Shattenkirk (New Rochelle, N.Y.), Pete MacArthur (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Colby Cohen (Villanova, Pa.) also scored BU’s other goals.

Maury Edwards (Rocky Rapids, Alb.) and Ben Holmstrom (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored for the River Hawks. Both goals came on the power play.

Jeremy Dehner (Madison, Wis.) and Barry Goers (Ivyland, Pa.) assisted on both UML tallies.

McCarthy and Cohen scored BU’s first period goals. McCarthy scored at 2:12, Cohen at 13:33 on the power play. Ryan Weston (Henniker, N.H.) assisted on McCarthy’s goal. Wilson and Yip had the assists on Cohen’s strike.

Edwards got the River Hawks on the board 8:03 into the second period with his sixth of the season, fifth of the year on the power play.

Two minutes and nine seconds after Edwards scored, the Terriers had added two more goals to their total. MacArthur netted his 12th of the year, from Bryan Ewing (Plymouth, Mass.), at 9:30.

At 10:12 Wilson made it a 4-1 game with his ninth of the season from Matt Gilroy (North Bellmore, N.Y.) and Yip.

Shattenkirk gave the Terriers a four-goal lead at 18:07 of the second from McCarthy and Yip. And Yip capped the BU scoring with his eighth of the season, fourth point of the contest, at 14:35 of the third.

In between Shattenkirk and Yip’s tallies, Ben Holmstrom scored on the River Hawks fifth power play of the night, at 10:28. Holmstrom has power play goals in consecutive games; all four of his goals on the season have come on the man-advantage.

Brett Bennett (Williamsville, N.Y.) made 27 saves for BU to earn his eighth win of the season.

Nevin Hamilton (Ashland, Mass.) started, but only played the first period. He stopped just three of five shots faced. Carter Hutton (Thunder Bay, Ont.) replaced Hamilton and made 24 saves over the final 40 minutes.

The Terriers out-shot the River Hawks 35 to 29 for the game. BU was 2-for-6 on the power play. UML was 2-for-5 on the man-advantage.

The River Hawks return to the ice Friday night for the first of a home-and-home series with Boston College. UML hosts BC Saturday night. The Terriers are next in action Monday afternoon (5:00 p.m.) against Northeastern in the consolation game of the 56th Annual Beanpot tournament.
