AMHERST, Mass. - The No. 11 UMass hockey team defeated the U.S. Under-18 National Team 5-2 in an exhibition game on Sunday night at the Mullins Center. Justin Braun, Chris Davis and Cory Quirk each had multi-point nights in the win. Five different Minutemen scored goals for the Mass Attack, while Dan Meyers made 19 saves including 11 in the second period. Ryan Hegarty and Colin Reddin tallied goals for the National Team. UMass returns to Hockey East action this Saturday when the Minutemen host New Hampshire.

Alex Berry, Braun, Quirk, Chase Langeraap, and P.J. Fenton all notched goals for UMass which evens its record against the National Team to 1-1. The Minutemen lost to the Under 18 Team in the only other meeting 4-1 on Feb. 15, 2002.

Berry put the Minutemen on the board first with a goal at the 8:03 mark of the first period, followed by a power play strike from Bruan four minutes later for the 2-0 lead.

Quirk extended that lead to 3-0 just 1:14 into the second period and Langeraap added the fourth goal 10 minutes later.

Hegarty put the National Team on the board at the 13:06 mark of the second to close the gap to 4-1.

Fenton scored UMass' fifth goal just 35 seconds into the third period before Reddin scored eight minutes later to give the final 5-2 margin.

UMass outshot the Under-18 Team 30-to-21 for the game including an 8-to-2 mark in the first period and a 14-to-7 mark in the third.

Joe Cannata started the game for the U.S. team making nine saves and allowing four goals in 31:40 of work. Nick Maricic played the final 28:20 allowing just one goal and making 16 saves.
