ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's ice hockey team exploded for eight goals in a 8-3 win over the University of New Brunswick in an exhibition game on Sunday afternoon at Alfond Arena. Five different Back Bears tallied at least a goal and an assist for the Black Bears.

Maine struck for three goals in the first 7:07 of the opening stanza. Steven Swavely (Reading, Pa.) fed Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario) 2:11 into the game and he fired the puck into the back of the net. Cam Brown (Natick, Massachusetts) then found the back after Cedric Lacroix (Shefford, Quebec) had a shot. Nolan Vesey (North Reading, Massachusetts) then made an outstanding pass to Swavely who beat New Brunswick goalie Chris Carozzi at 7:07.

The Varsity Reds scored the lone two goals of the season period from Philippe Maillet and Cameron Brace to cut the Maine lead to just one goal at 3-2.

Maine scored five third period goals to earn the 8-3 victory. Vesey got the scoring starting when he got the puck in the slot and roofed it over Carozzi at 5:29. Brown the fed Conor Riley (Massena, New York) from behind the net and he fired the puck into the far upper corner of goal at 6:31. Jack Musil (Hull, England) then had a shot that Carozzi saved, but the rebound when right to Lacroix who deposited the puck into the back of the net just 40 seconds later.

Brace scored his second goal of the night at 9:10 of the third period as New Brunswick cut the lead in half at 6-3.

Musil got his first goal of the night when he carried the puck up the ice and beat Carrozzi at 14:29. Maine capped the scoring just over a minute later when Dan Renouf (Pickering, Ontario) has his shot from the point find the back of the net on a pass from Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario).

Maine used three goals in the victory. Matt Morris (Ridgewood, New Jersey) got the start and played 34:29. He stopped 15 shots, allowing just one goal. Sean Romeo (Cary, North Carolina) made 10 saves in 20 minutes of action. Chris Howat (Bangor, Maine) played the final 5:31 for the Black Bears.

Carozzi made 22 saves in 60 minutes for New Brunswick.

Maine was 0-for-3 on the power play, while New Brunswick finished 0-for-1.

The Black Bears return to action on Friday, Oct. 10 when they travel to Anchorage, Alaska for the Kendall Hockey Classic. The puck drops at 12 midnight eastern time.
