NEW YORK - Freshman Doug Grimes scored his first collegiate goal, but the No. 5 Boston University men's ice hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 16/17 Cornell on Saturday night in the ninth edition of Red Hot Hockey at Madison Square Garden.

BU (9-4-1) had its five-game win streak snapped after Cornell (5-3-1) scored twice in the third period. Freshman Shane Lachance assisted on Grimes' goal, which gave BU a 1-0 lead after two periods. Junior Mathieu Caron made 17 saves while the Big Red's Ian Shane stopped 35 of the 36 shots he faced.


HOW IT HAPPENED

- BU outshot Cornell, 10-2, in the first period but was unable to find a way past Shane.

- Grimes finally broke through with 5:47 remaining in the second stanza. Lachance intercepted a Cornell clearing attempt and quickly found Grimes in the slot. Grimes collected the pass and ripped a shot past Shane.

- Caron was sharp for the Terriers in the second stanza, stopping all 11 shots he faced as Cornell made a push late in the frame.

- The Big Red evened the score with a power-play marker at 3:58 of the third before capitalizing on a broken play to take a 2-1 lead at 8:24.

- Freshman Macklin Celebrini came close to equalizing when his one-timer on a power play was cleared off the crease by a Cornell defender.

- BU had a 5-on-3 advantage for 38 seconds late in the third but was unable to convert.

- The Terriers pulled Caron in favor of an extra attacker with 1:33 remaining in regulation, but were unable to tie the game.


GAME NOTES

- Grimes became the 15th different Terrier to light the lamp this season.

- Graduate student Cade Webber led BU with six of the Terriers' 17 blocked shots.

- The Terriers outshot Cornell, 36-19, and generated 73 shot attempts to just 51 for the Big Red.

- BU was 0-for-4 on the power play while the Big Red went 1-for-5 with the man advantage.


UP NEXT

- BU will close out the first semester when it faces Merrimack in a home-and-home series on Dec. 1-2.

- The two-game set begins Friday in North Andover at 7:30 p.m.
